"August: Osage County" premieres at TIFF, Meryl absent due to illness

Sadly, it's been reported that Meryl was unable to attend tonight's world premiere of August: Osage County at the Toronto International Film Festival.   Hundreds of tweets are pouring in of reactions to the film.  There are far too many to sift through for favorites, so I'll just link to the IMDb page that lists many of them.   Of course, tweets are pretty much all over the place in regard to opinions.  However, if we can take away anything from this plethora of reactions, it would have to be the almost universal praise for Meryl's performance as Violet Weston, and based on this how it seems like a realistic expectation that she would go lead at this point.   Responses to the film are overall good, but not great.  I don't really want to say much more at this point other than I'm absolutely loving all the chatter about the film and Meryl.  The real story will be how actual critics respond to the film within the next 24 hrs.   Stay tuned and feel better, Meryl!

  1. I am reading some of them now. I was so hoping for raves but it isn't so bad after all at least. I really want a small masterpiece here. The biggest surprise is that Violet wears a wig..

    1. Yes about the wig! Apparently she is shown with short gray hair and puts the wig over it. Meryl getting very positive praise. And she is SO going lead.

  2. I doubt Meryl cares about a 4th Oscar. I think she really wanted a 3rd, however. I see her winning
a 4th down the road in a small supporting role ( I.e. Bergman in Orient Express).

    1. Most people dont think Bergman deserved that Oscar for that film. I think she has years of roles ahead (hopefully) and can still win one lead and possibly another Supporting way down the track to finish with 5.

I don't think it will happen this time as it is too close to last win and Blanchett will have a good run for it. I really wanted better reviews for this film but at least they are solid. I will wait for Jeff to collate before I add my 2 cents hehe

    2. I totally think Meryl cares about her total Oscar count, but she really tries to make it seem otherwise. I know for a fact she loves getting nominated, as she's said as much. The only good thing I can see coming of her not winning for August is that shortly down the road if people think she may have been overlooked for a great performance as Violet they'll be more inclined to make up for it with future recognition.

    3. As Kate said (I think?) actors always win for the wrong roles. So true.

    4. That's true up to a point but a lot win for the right ones, like Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman even.

And I think all of Meryl's wins were the best of their respective years.

    5. If we really went by "best" performances, Meryl would probably have 10 Oscars. No joke.
