The loss of "Places, Please"

I posted about three months ago that it seemed like Glenn Close was now attached to lead Places, Please, a feature film that was announced two years ago and was supposed to star Meryl. Since then, we've learned that Jessica Lange is actually going to be the one portraying Lillian Hall, not Close. More recently, and what prompted me wanting to post more about this, is that Kathy Bates has been revealed as starring as well. The loss of this film burns even more now, knowing that Meryl could've been a movie along with Kathy Bates! Filming is currently underway in Georgia.

As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I'm not sure why this film didn't end up getting filmed when they originally said they were going to (summer 2021). I've speculated on the possibilities of why Meryl may have not participated. But it's not like we haven't seen scenarios like this before; something promising gets announced, and then it just never happens with Meryl (and sometimes not with anyone). Examples that come to mind: EvitaMary Stuart, Daughter of the Queen of Sheba, Dirty Tricks, Mommy & Me, First Man, The Good House.

I honestly think that if I ever had the chance to chat with Meryl and if she were open to my questions, the biggest thing I'd love to ask her is what exactly happened or happens in situations like this (and for each particular film--if she could recall). It sort of all ties into my longstanding fascination about projects of hers that never came to be, or ones that she may have been hovering around but was never announced or cast, or for more juicy gossip, which she was turned down for and had really wanted--the ones we don't already know about (which are few, or course)! Only in my dreams.

  1. And what is even more confusing is that this whole interview even exists- Jamie

    1. It was the announcement of it in 2021, things change, that’s not confusing, it just happens.

    2. Not just announcement- a full-on sit down interview about the project with Streep and Director. That rarely happens- Jamie

    3. I'm going to speculate that she a) may have been too expensive for where the production ended up! Seems on the indie side. and b) she has played a lot of actresses in a row and may not have wanted to do it again!

    4. Meryl held out for a higher salary before she signed to do TDWP so that may have been a factor as to why she didn’t do “The Good House” and now this one.

There are probably scripts so good that she’d do the film for free. And perhaps this wasn’t one of them.

  2. I think Meryl, like Jessica Lange, Glenn Close and her peers, are all over 70s,and roles/options may be more limited than say, 5 years ago. Unless they choose to produce which may expand their choices much more. It's now the age of actresses like Tilda, Cate, Kate and the fiftysomethings in their prime and these are the ones the studios want to pursue (like Meryl back in her 50s/60s). Sad but true.

    1. I think there's still a market for older actresses. Look at Maggie, Judi, Helen. Not to mention the sadly departed Glenda Jackson who had a couple of excellent roles upon her return in her 80s.

I'd love to know what happened to cause Meryl to pull out but I just hope she and her family are well and it's just a question of this either not feeling like the right fit or she prefers to take some more time off.

  4. Funny, Lange, Bates, Rabe are all in it....like an American Horror Story reunion. I think Streep is up to something, but not sure what.

    1. What makes you think she's "up to something?"

    2. Sounds slightly sinister! Haha

    3. I'm seriously hoping Streep's "been up to" writing a memoir. There is so much more to know!

  5. It looks like there's nothing on her horizon. Even if she does sign on a movie this year, which is unlikely given her support for the SAG contract strikes, it will be released late next year. I was reading a commentor here saying that Judi, Helen, Maggie, primarily the dames of UK are still offered roles. While that is true, Meryl is very much part of the Hollywood system that does not value aged women like they do in the UK or even in France (Huppert, Binoche, etc). Much as it pained me to say this, her string of best roles (Prada all the way to The Post) may be over with the exception of maybe one or two gems hopefully in the pipeline. Like another reader here said it's now the world of the actresses younger by a decade or more. They are in their prime for sure.

  6. All about this project is strange. I know that the cast names can change, but Meryl was very involved with this project and she was also producing. I can't forget either the initial interview with the director. She seemed very happy with the script and her character.
Actually the movie is filming in Atlanta and one of the last names added to the cast was Pierce Brosnan. Pierce was in Atlanta last week. Does she still producing the movie?

    1. I would love if she were still producing! Would make sense given her expressed desire to see more stories of older women.

  7. I was really hoping Streep would star in this and Judith Light would play her sister. I am dying for those two to work together in film. I think they could realistically pass for sisters. I just watched POKER FACE episode with Judith an Epatha, wow! Would love to have seen Streep in one of those roles. Maybe they will bring Streep in for Season 2. I mean they had Ellen Barkin, Cherry Jones, Judith Light. I feel Streep is either about to retire, maybe not feeling well, or is just staying away from film until her ON GOLDEN POND script/director arrives. I can't imagine her career ends with only 2 lead actress Oscars when McDormand has 3 for arguably unchallenging roles.

    1. I'd love to see her work with Judith Light! And I'm crossing my fingers that Meryl's quiet couple of years is just one of her usual breaks and that she'll be back with a string of amazing performances. But of course I have to be realistic in regard to the number of options she likely has on any given day. It might be that we see her mostly in TV...which would be fine since most of the great roles these days for women over 50 seem to be in that medium.
