Streep rumored for voice role in Greta Gerwig's "Narnia" reboot

Maybe it's an early April Fools' joke, but a few articles are going around (none from super reputable sources) that Meryl has been approached to voice the role of Aslan in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Chronicles of Narnia reboot for Netflix. I think this is pretty believable news, as the two worked together on 2019's Little Women, and I think it's understood that they're both fans of each other.

I know next to nothing about the Narnia books, other than the fact that I like the movie Shadowlands and that stars Anthony Hopkins as the author, C.S. Lewis. My understanding is that this would be an adaptation of The Magician's Nephew, which chronologically takes place prior to the other Narnia books. Sounds like Meryl would be up for role of the lion "Aslan" the lion, who evidently is an "allegory for Jesus." Kind of interesting that they're possibly having that character voiced by a woman. And it would probably be a fairly prominent role (Gerwig is reportedly set to direct at least two films).

I'm generally not all that interested historically in Meryl's voice work, but it's always nice to hear/know that she's signing up for projects. Here's hoping we can get some news soon on The Corrections and/or the Devil Wears Prada sequel (or heaven forbid something completely new or original).

The film is scheduled to film later this year, ahead of its planned IMAX release in November 2026.

  1. The news doesn't excite me at all. I want to see Meryl on the big screen! Quite a letdown for me.

Me too - except for ‘Hope Leaves The Theatre’ which is one of my favorites of everything she’s ever done 😆

  3. Fantastic Mr Fox was memorable but I guess we all want to SEE Meryl in a feature movie and not just hear her voice, right? I refuse to believe there's a shortage of good roles for her. I think she's just not as motivated as before what with her new romance and before that, her separation from Don. Well, I guess it is what it is.

    1. I wish Wes Anderson would cast her in a live action role.

    2. If she wasn't motivated she wouldn't have done Only Murders, and she has said she's looking for film roles. It's not that.

    3. I don't know, part of me suspects she took the role in Only Murders to spend more time with Martin. Of course that's only one reason among others I guess. I mean, look, if she'd wanted to do movies, she could. She's one of the greatest and directors would line up to work with her. That's why I said she might not be as motivated as before. But we are not Meryl so that's just a hunch.

    5. I got the strong impression that she started a romantic relationship with Martin after she started working on the show. Maybe it's why she did a second season (or part of the reason).

I don't think there's any question she's still interested in screen acting. I don't think the DWP2 is a hoax. The news of her being attached to The Corrections is legit. They may not happen, but that's been the case with a dozen projects over the last 25-30 years for her. We're all starved for "Meryl-like" movies. I think we'll get some good stuff. Just not exactly sure when. Would be fun if she had a string of 4-5 straight years of doing a bunch of "good" stuff.

    6. Meryl started to lose interest in filming movies in 2021. I don't think it has anything to do with her love life, or at least not with Martin. I'm also confused about what happened. Maybe there's no reason, just a sudden loss of interest. But obviously last year was a good sign. There were some news about new projects. In the past two or three years, there was no news about new projects, I even suspected that she asked her agent to close the channel for acting.

    7. In fact, TDWP2 and The Correction are still in the normal cycle so far. It may take several months or even a year from the project's establishment to the start of filming. TDWP2 is obviously not fake. When Emily Blunt and Tucci were asked about the TDWP2 by reporters, their answers were very ambiguous and they did not deny it.

    8. She wasn't close with him until Only Murders, where did you get the idea she was already with him before when she didn't even announce her separation yet?

    9. Gotta accept the reality that at a certain age there just isn't as many roles, even for Meryl

    10. Are some people having trouble reading comprehension? My point is that Meryl's rumors with Martin didn't start until 2024, and she stopped making movies in 2021, so her making movies or not has nothing to do with Martin's romance.

    11. I agree with you I'm addressing the person who seemingly thinks their relationship started before she joined the show

    12. I don't think that person meant that either. Maybe he wanted to express that Meryl's separation from Don and her relationship with Martin affected Meryl's desire for work. I don't think so, at least not the main reason. The key still depends on Meryl herself.

    13. Every time I see a Wes Anderson movie that's not animation, I ask myself 'where's Meryl'? So many greats in his movies. Then I remember Meryl wasn't even his first choice in Fantastic Mr Fox but Cate Blanchett. I mean Meryl could be in a stellar supporting role like Scarlett or Tom Hanks and his movies are always so fun to watch.

  4. Deadline has corroborated this report. The internet is in furore. However I predict Aslan will remain with mane even voiced by Meryl so people should chill out. Also fingers crossed for some DWP2 news tonight at Disney/20th Century CinemaCon presentation!

  5. https://www.closerweekly.com/posts/inside-meryl-streeps-career-love-and-family-life-at-75/

It explains why she has not taken on any film roles of late. Very enlightening. As I said before, priorities changed as we aged. Looking forward to her next film role though.

    1. This article is typical of talking to oneself. If there is official news now that Meryl is filming, this magazine will immediately have another statement. Meryl has been actively trying comedy since the 1990s. She has played a lot of comedies since 2000. It didn't start with "OMITB". I never thought that Meryl was filming just for the Oscar. The media likes to attribute everything about female stars to their other half when their private lives change. Meryl and Don separated in 2017, but Meryl was still filming. It was not until 2021 that she started to film less. Meryl and Martin started to have a relationship in 2024. All this has nothing to do with these men. Meryl has always attached equal importance to family and career. In the past, every time the media asked Meryl to choose between family and career, her answer was family. When she was young and at her peak, Meryl only filmed one movie a year on average, and rejected many movies filmed outside New York and Los Angeles because she insisted on going home to be with her children at night and staying at home with her children on weekends. Objectively speaking, there are very few scripts with women over 70 as the main characters. According to statistics, only 5% of the characters with lines in 2024 are women over 60. If she is willing to take more roles, she will have them, but they are just special cameos in small roles in various blockbusters. I guess you don't like them either. In short, we still look forward to projects that have been reported by authoritative media, such as Prada 2 and The Correction. Don't think too much about the rest, just let it go and accept that she will not be as active as before. She is really getting older. If I were 75, I would not want to work every day, I would just want to lie down.

    2. I agree with the idea that it seems unlikely that Meryl did fewer roles because of a romantic relationship. But I think you're wrong about her not wanting to work because she's "old." I don't think actors of Meryl's caliber really ever want to stop. There's too great of a need to express themselves or be this other person (or maybe just have some limelight), that if the opportunities are there, they cannot say no. Yes, there are fewer roles out there than there used to be. But there are a LOT more roles for women in her age group than there were even fifteen years ago. And some are great. She can do it if she wants to. And I think she wants to.
