2018 Golden Globe predictions

It's really difficult to call winter my least favorite season, because it includes possibly my favorite period of the year: awards season! Tomorrow night, the Hollywood Foreign Press will hand out their Golden Globe Awards for achievement in film and television.  As usual, I enjoy predicting the winners in the acting categories.  Check out the starred(*) names below among the nominees for my winners selections.

2. Hong Chau (Downsizing)
3. Allison Janney (I, Tonya)
4. Laurie Metcalf* (Lady Bird)
5. Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water)\

In my opinion, this is by far the best chance Meryl has at picking up a major televised award this year. The Post was completely shut out at SAG, and it's not even a foregone conclusion that she will get an Oscar nomination. But the HFPA love her, and if she were to come away with a win in this category tomorrow, I'll relax a little in regard to her chances for a nom. Let's not forget her speech last year at the ceremony (see clip below)? She is in a film about the importance of a free press, and they might want to reward her.

For the other categories, I would not be surprised is Frances McDormand, James Franco or Christopher Plummer won. I think the entire rest of the season for Supporting Actress will come down to Metcalf and Janney (with Metcalf likely taking Oscar). I'm probably out on a limb a bit with Daniel Kaluuya, but right now it just sort of feels right.  I'd love to see Timothée Chalamet make the upset, and I think Margot Robbie is a distant second behind Saoirse Ronan.

Super excited for Sunday!

  1. Meryl will get the Oscar nomination!- Jamie

  2. I share your sentiment on Timothée Chalamet for the upset! I think his work in Call Me By Your Name was outstanding... and I'm saying this even after seeing Darkest Hour.

Ever since you introduced us to Awards Watch, I've been following the Best Actress conversations (as I am sure you are). Those forums cause SO MUCH ANXIETY!!!

Here in Toronto we have a theatre (luckily) showing The Post as of last Friday. Taking the day on Monday to go see it and will then watch the recorded GGs.

Thanks for your posts Jeff! Hope you have your tickets for the 12th. --Jack

    1. Totally agree that the AW can create so much anxiety. Everyone has their favorites, and comments are incredibly fickle at times when even the slightest bit of ambiguous news turns up about anything.

      Thanks for reading, Jack!

  3. Great predictions! I don't know why I feel this is one of the toughest year for Meryl (regarding award season). I am also not so positive about her getting a nomination.

On the other hand, some actors/actress predictions are quickly changing. I feel the Oscar noms will be full of surprises.

  4. She will get the Oscar nomination-I think the 5 Best Actress Predictions are locked. And I cannot fathom The Post being nominated for Best Pic without other nominations- including for Streep to follow-
I think we are all feeling the SAG snub effects but a majority of them did not even watch. This is Streep’s week on Ellen, Kimmel, and on Ghe Graham Norton show next week! She has been campaigning non- stop and will be awarded so.
No fears- no frets- be positive- Jamie

  5. Stranger things have happened than Meryl getting a Globe tonight! I'd love if it happens and think the audience would too!

I could easily see Sally get it but Frances has never won one before so could this give her an edge?

I just hope the whole thing goes out without any snide comments. Feelings seem to still run very high.

  6. Whether Meryl wins or not, she's in a movie that will be remembered, I think, in decades to come next to All The President's Men. It's also a cultural touchstone amidst the 'fake news' under this current US administration. David.

  7. Geez, not a single award for The Post? Shocking. David
