"Florence Foster Jenkins" set for U.S. release in August?

IMDb is now showing that Florence Foster Jenkins will be released in the United States on August 31.  That's a Wednesday.

OK this seems bizarre.  The film has a wide-release set in the U.K. for May 6, almost four months prior.   I don't think it's weird that the month of August was chosen, I'm just confused as to why there would be such a large gap between wide releases.  It's not like it's premiering in Cannes in May or at some other festival first and then going wide in the States.  And yes, different countries often don't get films until months after their original premiere, but this seems unprecedented for a Meryl Streep film that will seemingly be a fairly mainstream pic that's set in the U.S.  I realize that the picture was filmed in and produced by companies in the U.K. but it's still perplexing.  For all we know this could change.  More to come.

  1. I guess they have a good movie in their hands because they do not seem to care about the date. I mean they will premiere the movie April 12 and then wait almost a month before it opens in UK. Seem to me they know the movie will last until awards season. In the meantime, let the movie have almost a year to collect money around the globe that would be a bonus. You know last year Carol premiered in May at Cannes. It was good enough to stay through awards season but did not find success at box office when they'd waited till almost the end of the year to show it. So if Florence Foster Jenkins is really good as i believe it is. They should let the movie find the audience first and then get awards later.

  3. I don't mean to burst the bubble but something here doesn't make sense. If you look at UK or US movies, they are usually released within a month from each other unless they are played at film festivals or in limited release. I suspect there's something going on in the marketing department of Florence to which we have no privy. And I don't think it's all about having confidence in the quality of Florence. Something's amiss....

    1. Nothing's been confirmed yet so no need to worry too soon. I do wish they'd show the film in one of the festivals though...
