Deadline is reporting that veteran actress Margo Martindale has been cast as Mattie Fae in August: Osage County. She'll play Meryl's sister and Chris Cooper's husband. When I saw this news, I had to look up her name because I had no idea who she was...until I saw a picture. I most remember her as the despicable mother to Hilary Swank's character in Million Dollar Baby, but also realized that she's already been in two Meryl movies. She played the psychiatrist in Marvin's Room and Julianne Moore's babysitting neighbor in The Hours.
She's a fantastic actress, and fits the mold for Mattie Fae perfectly, both physically and from what she's shown in her previous work as a character actress. This news makes Martindale the only cast member who is not an Oscar nominee, although she won a Emmy last year for her supporting role in Justified on FX. Um yeah, never caught that one. Regardless, I think she is wonderful addition to the cast, despite my prediction of Dianne Wiest landing it. It was also fun to see Deadline report in the article that shooting is set to begin in Oklahoma on September 24. We knew it was likely happening around that time, but I don't recall ever seeing an official date. Here's how the cast is shaping up. So jazzed!
