After watching the below video, I'm actually kind of getting excited to see this film. I'm a great fan of the original and the sequel's production value looks exquisite. Only a year and a half to wait!

Behind the scenes look at "Mary Poppins Returns"
Entertainment Weekly is running a cover story on Mary Poppins Returns. In it, they apparently give us some behind the scenes info on the making of the film. There's a link to a few new production stills as well. Although we don't get a glimpse of Meryl in character as Topsy, we do get a shot of her at the piano with Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda:

I just watched the Tonys and I kept thinking to myself - when will someone write a play for Meryl? She ought to be on the stage. I will gladly trade Mary Poppins or Mamma Mia for a great play, revival or original, it doesn't matter. She'd said this a few times in the past (pre-Aughts): I will do more stage productions once my children are all grown up. But I guess her priorities may have changed and what she said has never come to pass. Still keeping fingers crossed though. David
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I would want Meryl to do a play would be so I could see her perform live. With movies, I can watch from anywhere over an over. To be honest, I'd prefer that she keep doing screen work. A lot of it.
DeleteJeff, I have a different take on this. Sure, there's no doubt in my mind that films can be preserved for repeated watching (unlike stage productions unless they are filmed which renders a rather different viewing impact). As a long-time Meryl's fan, I have watched every of her movies except her cameo in The Homesman, so the ultimate experience for me is to see her LIVE in a play. It's just like listening to my favourite singers and watching their DVDs for the longest time and yearning to catch them live one day (like what I did with James Taylor, Streisand, Aretha and U2). Likewise, being a fan of Cate Blanchett and Laura Linney, I saw them on stage and nothing beats that experience, my love for their film performances notwithstanding. In particular, I was in awe of Blanchett's Streetcar performance, the best in my opinion. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing Meryl on stage one day even though I reckon that's not her career priority at the moment).
