Release date postponed for "August: Osage County"...again?

Ugh.  The Pittsburgh Post Gazette is reporting that the release date for August: Osage County is being postponed yet again.  The film was originally to be released November 7, then got moved to Christmas Day.  Now it's possibly being pushed back two weeks to Friday, January 10.  This was the only article I found making this claim, but it'd be pretty weird if it were just made up.  There are several films being released within a week's time of Christmas, so perhaps Harvey Weinstein wants to make August's opening a bit less competitive.  If I hadn't been able to see this movie at the Twin Cities Film Festival in October I would be livid at this point.  I think I'll wait for further confirmation before adjusting the countdown calendar to the right.

  1. Ugh I hope that is not true. I am so anxious to see this movie. I hope this is not a bad sign for Oscar chances. I am starting to see some predictors taking Streep out of top 5 :(

    1. It makes me a little nervous too, Mary. I have not seen this confirmed anywhere else, however. We'll know more about Meryl's chances on Wednesday when SAG nominations come out.

    1. Yeah saw that. Sorta small potatoes, no? Don't get me wrong, if I were a betting man, I'd include Meryl in my top five for Oscar noms. There just a bit of uncertainty in the air.

    2. I am sure she will be nominated for all the big awards, I don't care where the predictors are placing her. I'm also sure Weinstein will push the film a lot no matter when it is released but I have a feeling he will be more for Dench this year in the actress stakes...

  3. Hello,
Since you have seen the film Jeff what is wrong with the movie that it isn't getting best picture recognition? Extremely thrilled for Meryl Streep that she is getting the recognition but curious what happened with the movie - seemed like there were high expectations all year that it would do very well overall. The comments I read from people in various places all have high praise for the movie. I can't wait to see this...it looks great to me.

    1. Hi Mary,
I don't think there's anything wrong with the movie. Expectations for this were out of this world because the play was extremely successful. It's certainly very difficult to adapt stage plays to film well. This went from a three hour play to two hour film and getting that cadence right doesn't always transfer with the same punch as the play.

That said, the film is currently at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes (which is good) and has been climbing since it premiered at Toronto in September. And its getting actor recognition, some for writer Tracy Letts and of course ensemble at the SAGs. I can't wait to see it again. It's a very good film.
