"August: Osage County" set for world premiere in Toronto

Several sources are reporting that Meryl's upcoming film August: Osage County will receive its world premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival.  The film will be a gala event for the festival, which runs from Sep 5-15.  SO excited about this!  It's not as if this news means I'll see the film any sooner than Christmas (Toronto isn't too far from Minneapolis though...should I go?!?!), but it does mean that we'll get a shit ton of reviews and countless opinions on Meryl's performance and the film itself

The TIFF website indicates that August's running time is 130 minutes.  The length of the picture has long been a source of speculation, as the play runs well over three hours.  I was anticipating about 2.5 hours for the film, so I'm a little surprised that they were able to pare it down to 2 hours, 10 minutes.  It's still longer than an average film, but I'm hopeful that none of the juicy stuff is missing.

Other notable films making either their world or North American premiere at the festival which happen to star possible Best Actress contenders include Philomena (Judi Dench), Gravity (Sandra Bullock), Blue is the Warmest Color (Adele Exarchopolous), The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him and Her (Jessica Chastain) and Labor Day (Labor Day)Let the bloodbath begin.

  1. I was really excited until I realised they don't have a Best Actress award. Would have loved Meryl to whip her competitors long before awards season just to show who's boss. Still great exposure though!

    1. Yeah, I just don't want buzz to build too hard too fast. Although Jennifer Lawrence wasn't in the picture much until last year after TIFF. My hope is that after the festival people predict that something incredible would have to top Meryl.

  2. I think it's great that Harvey has the faith to unveil AOC the festival route. It may also get a sneak
Peek showing at Telluride. This is the route Harvey took with The King's Speech. Keep your
fingers crossed for a performance that is in unbeatable...

  3. Jeff! Let's go to Toronto! Split a room, which is the expensive part :)

I think this move means Harvey is very confident in the film. I mean 3 months before the release date means he wants good word to spread. Most film critics will be in attendance and they rarely embargo reviews from films at film fests.

    1. I hope you're right regarding Harvey's confidence in the film. Interestingly I read an article today in which Ewan McGregor told his mom to make a bet with a bookie that Meryl will win her fourth Oscar for "August" and the bookie wouldn't take the bet!

    4. As we said before, Meryl may be put into Musical/Comedy at the Globes. Now it seems we have met her main competitor!

    5. The closer we get the more I feel Meryl will go drama. That may all change depending on how the competition stacks up, but right now I'd say drama.

    6. I agree that legitimately she should be going drama but since Weinstein will already be campaigning 2 in that category (Judi and Nicole, that we know of) I just suspect he will want to maximise his chances of more wins by mild category fraud with Meryl.
If all 3 went Drama then it's likely only 1 winner. Whereas if he splits his eggs into multiple baskets...?

    7. You make a good point regarding the number of other ladies Harvey has to push. If My Week with Marilyn can be pushed as a musical, August can be pushed comedy.
