Streep officially returning for season 4 of "Only Murders in the Building"

Well, we were kind of already expecting this news after the announcement a couple of days ago that Only Murders in the Building was headed to Los Angeles for season four. Multiple sources are reporting today that Meryl will be officially returning for a second season. 20th Television president Karey Burke confirmed the rumor in an interview saying, "Meryl will be returning for a second season because she had a tremendous time." Molly Shannon (love her) was announced yesterday as joining the cast as well, whose character is a high-powered businesswoman.

No word on exactly how big Meryl's role will be in this season. My guess is that filming is starting very soon (if it hasn't already). Hopefully this leaves the rest of the year available for her to film something new and fabulous! Maybe with how "fun" this project has been for her she'll be a bit more apt to get involved with something a bit heavier and dramatic. Fingers perpetually crossed these days.

    1. Agreed. I could take or leave Only Murders but I'm glad it was good turn for Meryl. Only opens more opportunities.

  2. Hopefully there are other movie projects and not just OMITB like last year.

  3. As she nears 75, I'm starting to learn to accept that we're gonna get what we get and if this is what we get this year, I'll celebrate that. It could be nothing after all!

  4. While I'm happy for Meryl and those who enjoy OMITB, I'm not excited about it - I didn't even catch the rest of the episodes with Meryl in them after her debut in last season. Films and stage productions thrill me more like Anatomy of a Fall, Perfect Days, Poor Things, Picture of Dorian Gray - productions which make me miss my Meryl so much in all her glory. I'm hoping we would hear something grand after her S4 OMITB shoot.

    1. Don't forget the comment Meryl apparently made about having several projects cooking!

    2. I keep thinking back to this too. It was such an obscure source/comment, but seemed unlikely made up. They're probably filming OMITB very soon and I doubt Meryl's time commitment is huge. Easily opens her up for something bigger this summer or fall.

    3. He was the first to confirm that Meryl would be returning to OMITB4, so I think he's somewhat credible.

  5. Meh. This is clearly a favour to the OMITB gang. Can’t believe I’m so jaded about something Meryl Streep is doing!

    1. I feel very similar, Mike. Better than nothing, but really need something more exciting and difficult.

    2. Something’s going on. I daren’t even publicly comment, but if this goes on much longer I’m going to have to assume a boycott of some kind is in place.

    3. Nobody is boycotting Meryl come on, she's just doing what she wants to do with people she loves.

    4. And people love her in it, they're very excited for her returning.

    5. A boycott is something that hasn’t been considered. They’ve happened for as long as movies have been made, to groups and individuals, short and long-term, for all kinds of reasons.

Streep’s big public statements and stances escalated from 2016 onwards, through political shifts and highly public legal and moral scandals and trials by media.

The thought of a boycott crossed my mind watching another actress in two tiny moments from a 2019 studio production after decades off our screens due to powerful machinations against her.

Hollywood history is replete with stories of boycotted actors working with friends while they were blacklisted.

Looking at Streep’s credits since her fantastic speech at the Globes in 2017, we don’t see her A-lister status resulting in her headlining major studio releases.

I don’t feel like listing boycotted actors of the past decade here, because it’s an unfair to perpetuate the pushback; but you could probably think of a few, Anonymous!

For those of us who don’t get a thrill out of another season of OMITB for Meryl, it’s something to consider.

When an announcement of a lead in a major screen project lands, I’ll be extremely happy to be wrong. Until then, my comments are no different to any other journalist analysing something they know plenty about for an opinion piece. A headline: “Has Meryl Streep been boycotted?” is not out of place, in fact it would sit very well in the media landscape right now between all the AI-generated crap.

    6. She was in Mamma Mia 2, Little Women, played the President of the United States in Don't Look Up, all huge successes, so it makes no sense to even suggest she's been boycotted...

    7. Everything she's said aligns with liberal hollywood, so why would they boycott someone that's only been saying what they all believe?

    8. And, she's still gotten awards nominations, so it makes no sense to claim she's been boycotted

    9. I understand it’s not a palatable idea to you, Anonymous, but your feels don’t negate anything I’ve written. Not everyone in the room applauded Streep’s Globes speech. Not every studio head is Liberal. The speed of your reply meant you missed a few nuances; mainly that blacklisted actors still work and even get award nominations, but their career trajectories change. Over and out.

    10. Mike, who's the 2019 actress? No one is coming to mind for me. I don't think it's that wild to consider that some semblance of a boycott is happening. I suspect most studio executives are not particularly interested in art, rather money. Not hard to picture them being a tad less than liberal.

That said, I don't actually think it's happening. I think it would be strange that Meryl was announced for a project like Places Please had she been boycotted. I concede that that was three years ago now, but same applies to having filmed The Prom and Let Them All Talk in 2019, followed by Don't Look Up.

I do feel like something stranger than usual has bedeviled Streep's work schedule post-Pandemic. Yes, there are going to be fewer and fewer roles, but I feel like she's in a different category, in that those typical demographic questions or standards we apply to actresses (particularly of a certain age) don't apply as much.

I hope any thought of her being shut out of projects (her contemporary actresses would probably roll their eyes so hard at that notion--as if she's not or hasn't historically had innumerable opportunities) comes to quick end by her being announced for something major. And soon.

  6. And everything she's said aligns with liberal hollywood so they would have no reason to boycott her when she's saying what they all believe

  7. I think Meryl's fading away over the past few years has caused some panic for you guys, the fact that she's in her seventies, she's stretched her career line tremendously, and she's going to be out of our sight someday. I think you guys just don't want to accept that. Even the greatest heroes have to fall. I know you guys have loved her for years and it's hard to accept that. Meryl's career has been unparalleled, the most influential actress in decades. Let's just be normal, maybe there will be surprises, if not, forget it, she's given us so much already. Her being happy and healthy is everything.(I've only been a fan of hers for the last year, so I may be wrong, sorry if I've offended.)
