Looks like no Almodóvar movie for Streep

Variety announced yesterday that Julianne Moore has officially been cast alongside Tilda Swinton in Pedro Almodóvar's upcoming English-language feature film debut, The Room Next Door. It's reportedly about a relationship between a mother and a daughter (Swinton the mother) and Moore as Swinton's friend. I suspect that had Meryl also been attached, they would've announced her as well.

One thing that I'm still confused about is that previous reports suggested that the movie would star three veteran actresses who play friends. Maybe the "three" was not necessarily a trio of friends, but that the daughter is one of the group. So I guess it leaves open a shred of possibility that Meryl could be in it, but it seems very unlikely to me. John Turturro was also announced as attached to star in the film. No word on what his role may be.

Still waiting on some project news from Meryl.

    1. “Martha's strained relationship with her mother fractures completely when a misunderstanding drives them apart. Their mutual friend Ingrid sees both sides of the rift.” Per IMDB so looks like the mother needs to be cast?- Jamie

    4. Oh wow. Actually then yes this leaves open the mother role...assuming the description is correct. I rechecked the deadline article, and I may have read it wrong. I think I read it to be that Swinton was the mother, where it says that Moore's character is a friend of Martha's mother (Martha being Swinton).

Swinton is only about 12 years younger than Meryl, so a mother-daughter casting would be a stretch. But Tilda can easily play someone in mid to late 50s, and if Meryl someone around 75, it would work just fine. Then again, do we even know that the mother is going to have screen time and therefore be someone to cast??

  2. Meryl Streep is presenting at the Grammys. That's a bit unusual for her.

    1. Yeah saw that. Maybe she'll know ahead of time or something that she's winning for the spoken worse album or whatever. Will be curious if we find out the "why."

    3. Didn't she once do a presentation for Paul McCartney? I really hope she wins though I would have preferred it for her singing on a soundtrack. Into The Woods deserved a nomination in my opinion, her vocals were top notch there.
