Hulu shared a brief clip of the upcoming third season of Only Murders in the Building:
\It's hard to tell the context of that scene, but knowing Paul Rudd's character died on stage in the last episode of season 2 (spoiler!), it looks like they might have all been rehearsing a scene and Meryl's character missed her line?? Regardless, she looks great. With this show and the debut of Apple TV+'s Extrapolations later this week (which btw already has 5 reviews on Metacritic and is sitting at a mediocre 60), hopefully it marks a surge in Meryl participating in more projects than what we've seen in the last couple years.
No word on exactly when later this year we'll see season 3 of Only Murders in the Building.
I think she looks wonderful. At first I thought she was playing herself but the name card in front of her says "Loretta Durkin" and TVLine confirmed she's playing a veteran actress (adding to the meta-ness of the show) and is credited as a guest star rather than a series regular. Read the reviews for Extrapolations, which reveal more about her character and while I will still watch I just wish she had her own series in what I am now calling her Streaming Era (to include the films of late). Jeff, have you started watching Only Murders?
ReplyDeleteI share your sentiments on wishing Meryl had a more substantial role in something. Extrapolations is going to be small.
DeleteI am all caught up with Only Murders. I had been considering watching it prior to Meryl's casting, the of course watched the first two seasons in like a week. It's a fun show, nothing groundbreaking, but funny and smart. I look forward to seeing Meryl in it.
I must watch OMITB too, it was first recommended to me last year. I agree with both of you, I would love Meryl to have her own series, whether it be comedy, drama or a blend of each. 8-12 episodes a year with great writing and a character that gives opportunities to remind everyone what she can truly do when she has the material and talented team.
DeleteAnd of course my long-held desire that she returns to the stage in a great play or musical! Good to finally get some new material.
Any thoughts about this year's Oscars?
It seems bigger than a guest star part thought because other guest stars have been in a single episode or maybe two but her part certainly seems bigger than that. I could see her being a Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for this.
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm from Argentina and I'm a big fan of your blog. I always read it and although I don't speak English well, I translate into Spanish to better understand your publications. I wanted to ask you how do you see the possibility of Meryl playing Paulina Keal in Tarantino's latest film? Is it possible? I would love that collaboration
DeleteThanks for reading! And yes, I totally saw the news about the new Tarantino film, which is apparently going to be titled "The Movie Critic." I don't think it's going to be a pure biopic of Kael, perhaps based on her. Tarantino has been quoted in the past as wanting to work with Meryl, but I believe she's also commented her own distaste for how violent his films are. I have a lingering suspicion that Meryl might not be the biggest fan of his as a person, but that's pure speculation.
DeleteIf the role would be fitting for Streep, and if it were based on a Pauline Kael, it would be super exciting to see Meryl get involved. One, it'd be a very unexpected collaboration with Tarantino. And two, Pauline Kael was not a fan of Streep's, and I think the feeling was mutual. That would be a VERY interesting scenario to see played out. I wonder how much Tarantino knows about Kael and her reviews of Meryl in particular. Regardless, fun to think about!
I'm thrilled to see so many people suggesting Meryl. I think part of that is because people are pining for a great part (and film) from Meryl. We haven't seen her in theatres since 2018 and even then we weren't well fed! Bit parts on TV and streaming movies just don't seem to breaking through with the general population in the same way! Maybe OMITB will begin to change that, followed with several strong turns in film. Imagine Places, Please followed by the Tarantino. I'd even throw in a surefire commercial hit like a Mamma Mia 3! I just want to see her on the big screen.
Delete(And the small screen too of course, maybe just not voicing a humpback whale, a la Extrapolations!)
I would love it if Streep was Pauline Kael with Tarantino- that sounds like a hit! -Jamie
ReplyDeleteMeryl and Tarantino (for his last movie) would be one for the history books for sure!!
