No SAG nom for Meryl

The Post was completely shut out from the Screen Actors Guild award nominations this morning. While it's certainly possible that the voting members just weren't big fans of the film, after its strong showing with the Hollywood Foreign Press two days ago, one has to wonder if the early concerns about the film's late release, and therefore sort of last minute effort to send out screeners, may have played a factor in its lack of recognition from SAG.

Regardless, this is a blow for Meryl's Oscar chances, as well as Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and the film itself. If Meryl somehow manages to bag the Golden Globe for Actress in a Drama, however, I'll be much more relaxed about her possibilities.  If I'm being as objective as I possibly can, I still think it is extremely unlikely that Streep will be snubbed by the Academy for a film that's getting good reviews and raves for her. Time will tell of course, and it makes this season a really fun and exciting one to watch.

The five actors nominated in Meryl's category were as follows:

Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul)
Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water)
Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)
Margot Robbie (I, Tonya)
Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird)

The SAG awards will be held Sunday, January 21. The full list of nominees can be seen here.

  2. Yeah, the Post had late screener issues. The Wolf of Wall Street and Django Unchained had the same problems but still prevailed (Christoph Waltz won without SAG!). So I wouldn't be worried.

  3. This year is just so crazy and unpredictable that I don't think this is as big of a hit to The Post as it may have been in other years. It has yet to be released in theaters so a great box office run will help it a lot, and it's even possible this SAG shut-out will make Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and Oscar voters want to rally around it more. But until January for now.

  4. Competition is really tough this year. Although her performance has the political factor on her side, I don't think it will be enough to get her a nomination. The only vacancy I feel it will make the final cut will be if they remove Judi Dench. But the next award that matter a lot if the BAFTA, and they love their films and for sure don't think it will be easy to take Judi Dench out.

I am sorry for being a bit more pesimistic, but I do not think Meryl will get the nomination this year :(

    1. I think Judi Dench will get a BAFTA nom, might be tough there for Meryl. But I still believe Meryl will prevail with AMPAS.

  5. I'm shocked. I thought SAG would be a certainty. But then again, the Best Actress race this year is an anomaly as there're no clear 1-2 frontrunners. The academy loves Dench as much as Meryl so it may be a tussle between the two for the final slot. David.

    1. Dench is amazing in most things but in this movie she was not..

  6. Sags just lost any credibility they had with me. Idiots nominated 17 times including Marvin's Room? Let's let the movie speak for itself..

  7. I truly believe that Meryl's snub had more to do with the timeline of its release than it did with the quality of the film/performance or the voting members' opinions of it. Were she to be snubbed for an Oscar nom, it would be an incredibly unprecedented scenario for her: raves for her performance, 87% currently on Rotten Tomatoes, prestige film, biopic, Globe nod, zeitgeist. We'll see where box office ends up, but I think it'll do well. At this point, I'm not worried.

  8. I do not see this as a snub for Meryl. The entire film went un-noticed. Given the large A-list cast with nearly unanimous praise for acting, it seems clear to me this was due to its late entry. I see Dench as the likeliest to lose the nomination come Oscar time, but in this year I wouldn't be surprised to see Robbie or possibly even McDormand lose out. Ronan and Hawkins appear to be locks.

  9. On a separate note, I just read Amanda Seyfried's comments on Mamma Mia 2 and I suspect Meryl's role will be a small one as it's reported the new movie will focus 'wholly' on Lily James' character. Oh well, I'm not gonna lose sleep over this as it's not one of my favourite Meryl's movies. Just something to share with everyone here. David.

    1. I hate to say it but I'm almost glad Meryl's role in this movie will be a small one. *Hides*. I loved Mamma Mia for what it was (and I loved that Meryl just got be silly and have fun) but I feel like they lucked out with the crazy global response it got. What I'm trying to say it that I don't forsee this sequel performing all that well so I'm glad Meryl's not the star (or the responsible one).

  10. Turning back to SAG Awards... I wouldn't be worried with this snub, that I consider a simple disregard. Meryl wasn's always particularly well treated by these guild, since she only won once, for Doubt, and she never won the award in the same years she was given her Oscars. Even when she won almost everything that there was to win for Iron Lady, they gave the SAG award to Viola Davis, who was really good in The Help, but not as good as Meryl.
Having all that said, I think she will no only be nominated, but also she remains in the run for the 4th oscar, even though I would bet this year can Saiorse or Sally year...
