Meryl Streep receives record 31st Golden Globe nomination

As expected, Meryl was nominated this morning for a record 31st time (breaking her own record) by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for her performance in The Post. The film also receive noms for Best Picture-Drama, Best Director (Steven Spielberg), Best Actor-Drama (Tom Hanks), Best Screenplay (Liz Hannah and Josh Singer) and Best Score (John Williams).  Only The Shape of Water had more nominations, with seven.

Meryl's co-nominees for Best Actress in a Drama were as follows:

Jessica Chastain (Molly's Game)
Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water)
Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)
Michelle Williams (All the Money in the World)

Williams was a surprise, at director Ridley Scott did re-shoots on his film, replacing Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer (who happened to bag a nom in supporting).

Some of the main contenders for Oscar nominations happen to be in the Musical/Comedy category this year, namely Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird and Margot Robbie for I, Tonya. The nominees in that category also included Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul), Emma Stone (Battle of the Sexes). I don't expect to see Helen Mirren (The Leisure Seeker) at future awards shows.

SAG noms announced on Wednesday!

The full list of Golden Globe nominees can be found here.

    1. I replied to this before but it disappeared. Don't underestimate the impact Meryl had on the Globes last year. How much they want to honour a work about freedom of the press. Or how much Meryl is getting raves for her performance. Or the movie too for that matter..

  2. I'd say she's more likely to win the globe than a 4th Oscar for The Post. She hasn't really won any of the critics awards this year. However, there really isn't a clear frontrunner so she does have that going for her. I would worry about a backlash but a win is a win. Once she has it no one can take it from her no matter how overrated or undeserving some may say she is.

    1. She won The National board of Review for the first time since the 80s. And no, a win is not a win. I'm sick of people saying overrated. She's an Actress. But one who speaks her mind. Her performances should be judged on their merits alone apart from all the reputation/politics of the season. And on that alone I'm confident she's worked terribly hard to give us all something very authentic and worthy of debate.

  3. Does anyone know the Streep-Polanski connection that all the conservative haters keep bringing up? As far as I know Meryl has never worked with him or even been pictured with him. What is the real story behind the 2003 "standing ovation" that people keep bringing up to justify calling her a hypocrite? I may be a biased fan but I honestly believe Meryl when she says she didn't know about Weinstein and don't believe the Polanski defender thing people keep pushing. Anyone have better insight?

  4. Please let's stop all this shit on this website. Anyone who thinks Meryl would support any kind of abuse when she sacrificed the most premier career in movies/theatre to raise 4 kids needs to reconsider and back of. I'm so sick of these silly attacks

  5. This is what you get, Meryl. When you raise your head above the parapet to speak out. All sorts of lies. Accusations and innuendos. Let's just ignore that and go with The Post..
