Streep to team with Spielberg and Hanks for "The Post"

Oh. My. God.  It's hard to believe that the blacklist script I discussed two months ago might actually be filmed with Meryl.  Not only that, but Tom Hanks will co-star and Steven Spielberg is going to direct.  Multiple sources are reporting that The Post is set for production, to be co-financed by Fox and Amblin Entertainment.  Based on the Washington Post's publishing of the Pentagon Papers in 1971, Streep would portray publisher Kay Graham, with Hanks as editor Ben Bradlee.

It's not a huge surprise that this script interested Meryl.  The subject is very topical, in that it follows the process of the press trying to keep politicians honest.  And although no specific timeline has been revealed for filming, the Deadline article linked above states that they will "fit this into Spielberg's busy schedule soonest."

So thrilled to have a feature film lead role in the works for Meryl.  More to come soon I'm sure. Ahhh!

    2. I searched and searched and nothing yet. I'll join and read it. Does it have any big Oscar moments for her character? Emotional scenes?

    3. The main scene that comes to mind is toward the end where she gives a moving speech in front of the Supreme Court. It's not super long but it's moving.

  4. Jeff, who do you think should play the Daniel Ellsberg Role?

    1. I'm going to try to read it again by the end of the weekend. The only people I really pictured were Meryl and couldn't stop thinking about Russell Crowe for Bradlee. It'll be fun after reading it again to have in mind specific actors. Maybe my next post will be thoughts on that.

  5. Excellent news to finally have a project on the go!

Ideally I would love The Nix to get done and dusted quickly and released late this year, then filming this followed by The Good House. A full year of filming!

Jeff, do you think this role or Hildy Good is the more challenging or interesting? I would love it if everything would come together on these projects. It's so frustrating to get teased with the possibilities then for some reason the wheels come off. Still stinging from the loss of Masterclass here! haha

    1. I maintain that Hildy Good is a tremendously complex, interesting character. Kay seems a little less multidimensional, but she's got her own skeletons: husband committed suicide/chemical dependency, she has some reservations/insecurities about her ability to helm her company, pressure of business and ethical concerns and standards. Lord knows Meryl will probably bring even more humanity out of it though.

I really don't see The Good House happening at this point, but hope that The Nix comes to fruition. It's nice when Meryl gets to play complex characters that are not biopics. I'll hold a torch for The Good House, though.
