Will Meryl get her record 20th Oscar nomination Tuesday?

In two days, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce its nominees for the 89th Oscar ceremony.  If Meryl were to be nominated in the Lead Actress category for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins, it would be her 20th overall nomination, a record of course.  The closest actors in nominations are Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson, both with 12. Having already been nominated for the other "big three" awards (Golden Globes, SAG and BAFTA), at this point I think it would be a bigger story if Streep were not nominated than if she were.

Based on history, it seems like Meryl has a great chance for the nom, but of course there's no guarantee.  My guess for who will crack the top five includes the following:

Amy Adams (Arrival)
Isabelle Huppert (Elle)
Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Emma Stone (La La Land)
Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)

As I've mentioned before, Annette Bening, Ruth Negga, Emily Blunt and Taraji P. Henson will be nipping at the top five's heels.  Not surprisingly, I'm very much looking forward to watching the announcement on Tuesday.  Go Meryl!

    1. I have not but need to! That's why I haven't done a "sizing up the race" for those two performances. I stil can if/when their nominations are announced.

  2. I hope Meryl nabs her 20th. Many said it's due to her Golden Globes speech and not solely based on her performance. I beg to differ. She was spot-on - the fine line between being a terrible singer and one who just misses the mark. At the same time, I'm also slightly ambivalent about her nomination. If she misses and get nominated again for something more dramatic (as opposed to FFJ's lightweight category)which may boost her real chance of winning her 4th, then I'd rather she sit this out. But then again, who can predict the future? So I'll just root for her 20th given the variables! David

    1. I think I agree, David. A nom is always hoped for, but we're in a strange situation where she is expected at this point to score a nomination (deservedly), but if she doesn't, there will be a bit of a "snubbed" feel moving forward. For what it's worth, I came across this over the weekend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjCylJ01cKg&t=314s

I know it's from July but particularly see 2:23 and 38:32.

    3. I love how Ann Leary comes across in the video, I could easily see her and Meryl getting along well in that meeting she spoke Of. Very much hope for a start date on this in 2017.

I also really want to see Meryl in a role like Sissy Spacek in "In the Bedroom" or Julie Christie in "Away from her". Something small, intimate but astonishing..

    4. CJames, I share your sentiments. It would be refreshing to see her in a role like those you've cited. David.

    5. OMG Away from Her would've been amazing for Meryl. Loved Julie Christie, however. Julieta would maybe have been something similar. Maybe something with Xavier Dolan? He's open about how much he loves her.

  4. My main concern now is people saying she's up in part because people want to show support of her speech. Just not true, her work in FFJ completely merits recognition.

It would be tempting to build a case for a snub tomorrow improving her chances in the long term but I'm happy to see where the chips fall.

I find it so interesting that the gold Derby Best Actress debate and other outlets are saying it's not inconceivable that Meryl could win. I wouldn't want that this year as it would be a tainted win in many eyes. Fun to speculate though!
