Win a chance to meet Meryl

So, something popped up in my Facebook feed this morning while I was waiting at the auto shop. The "suggested" article, showed Meryl's face and the headline read something to the effect of "join Meryl Streep on the red carpet."  Out of mild curiosity, I clicked on the link and sure enough, Omaze was promoting a chance to join Streep on the red carpet for the premiere of Florence Foster Jenkins (no info on when the actual date is, unfortunately).  I assume it'll be in New York City.

I had never heard of Omaze.com nor of the 'RED' campaign, so before considering a donation, I did a little further investigation.  Turns out Omaze is a legit site that pairs with non-profit organizations to provide potential donors the chance at a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience.  Bono started RED in 2006 to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa, where 2/3 of the those infected worldwide live.  In exchange for a donation, my name is now in a random drawing to join Meryl at the premiere.   I've included the details below.  It's a good cause and enticing opportunity.  I can barely imagine how I'd react if my name were actually drawn, but with a $100 donation, my name is in the hat 1000 times.  And I got a t-shirt.

  1. Sounds like an awesome opportunity! I wonder if Meryl is aware of this happening.

I really don't see Florence (given the Director) being a late summer popcorn movie. I'm guessing September onwards. Iy should be well on the way to being finished though so let's hope it gathers some buzz over the coming months after this (not very exciting) Oscar season rolls by...

I'm glad this is the year Meryl isn't nominated. This Oscars So White thing is an absolute mess... and all probably started just because Will Smith wasn't nominated...good grief. I'm sure people would've been calling for Meryl not to attend to make a stand since she's so associated with the Oscars. I find it infuriating that people are basically blaming the Oscars just because there's a lack of black presence in prestige films. I'm relieved Meryl can stay far far away.

    1. I agree with the LWP. I'm thankful M will be able to steer clear of this year's Oscars. The last thing our gal needs is to become entangled in another race row after the Suffragette t-shirt debacle.

Hopefully after sitting out this year's ceremony Meryl will be able to storm the 2017 ceremony in a blaze of glory and emerge with a fourth Academy Award and her place in the history books even more firmly secured. Can't wait for a Florence trailer, I'm so curious about the kind of tone the film will strike; comedy? drama? dramedy?

    2. Difficult to tell by the trailer too! Look at August O:C painted like a comedy. Or Doubt seemed more like a thriller. Or The Iron Lady like a properly written biopic! Hehe.

I remember when she presented Best Actor in 2013 she wisely skipped most of the red carpet and didn't even seem to be in the audience. I think she's wise to keep a low profile unless she's nominated.

I think she goes to enjoy the show but also if she failed to attend (when nominated) people would attack her for being ungrateful or feeling "too good" for it.

I can't see any way Meryl gets a fourth this early... she barely won for TIL and she had great narrative and a tremendously baity role going into that race... she'll be lucky to be nominated at this point, especially after this race debacle, the academy will be looking to be more "diverse" out of obligation. I fear Meryl's going to have to give the performance of her life to get a fourth and with the way it's been going the last few years it doesn't look that promising at this point... especially since she literally has nothing in development(STILL baffling to me- I thought she was the ultimate "go to" actress for scripts.. even if she's taking the year off you'd think we'd still hear of SOMETHING in the pipeline).
I just hope FFF is actually good and serious enough for the Oscars. I feel like we haven't heard anything about it. Stephen Frears gives me hope but a completely mediocre costar like Hugh Grant does not. I hope it's not released in August- then it will probably be completely forgotten about by the Oscars since it doesn't seem like the blockbuster type to have a lot of buzz...

  4. Can someone share with me what movies Meryl was referring to when she said she'd read one or two the best scripts in her career recently? Is it Florence? Surely it can't be that dreadful Ricki? Or is it something we're not aware of? Btw, I think the OscareSoWhite started because some felt Mike Jordan (Creed) and Ibris (Beasts of no nation)should have been nominated. I think they may landed on the 6th spot in Lead and Supportive respectively. As for Will Smith, it's just hubris thinking he should be nominated. I've watched Concussion and I think his performance was nothing to shout about.

    1. It's never been confirmed which two scripts Meryl was talking about. At the time of her comments, I seem to recall thinking that they were likely Ricki and the Flash and The Goo House. I think the comments were from early 2014, so this was before Ricki was filmed, and nine months before it was announced Florence was to be made. But it could certainly be Florence. Let's hope so.

Did we ever get the notion that the Good House script was finished though? It was my impression that the script was what was holding up the project.
And I don't see how someone of her intelligence could have been referring to Ricki as "one of the best scripts".. the script tanked that movie!

I don't know, I guess there must be a real dearth in the scripts being offered to Meryl. I thought she had become the exception to the age barrier but that doesn't seem too be the case. It just sickens me that Jennifer Lawrence has like 6+ projects in development and Meryl has none. Everyone's always looking for "the new Meryl Streep" when the real one is still very much alive.

    3. I agree with your comment about Hugh Grant, he is so bland and recognisable in film. Let's hope this role is his razzie redeemer!

I always thought one of those scripts must have been Masterclass - surely it would need a great script to entice Mike Nicholls? The other I hoped was Ricki but fingers crossed it's now Florence!

LWP with Meryl's career you can never say never, look how many turns it's had so far..

We must believe she's biding her time for something truly worth her notice. There's no panic, I still believe she's going to keep blazing a way for older actresses in high profile work.

  5. Oh God forbids. Don't think the 'best script she'd read was Ricki. I cringed many times whilst listening to the dialogue in that movie! And it's even more disappointing coming from Diablo Cody who wrote the brilliant Young Adult! Hopefully it's Florence. Yeah, don't think it was Good House as the script was not ready in 2014 when Meryl made that comment.

  6. Couple quick notes: 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?' has been removed from Meryl's page on IMDbpro, and The Good House is listed on FilmNation website as 'in development.' Seems up to date. http://www.filmnation.com/the-nation/

I wonder that if the script for The Good House has indeed taken longer than expected, and the schedules of both Meryl and Robert De Niro required waiting, that when Meryl mentioned last year that Florence Foster Jenkins would be her last for a while, she knew she would not be filming The Good House until 2016.

    1. I am much less bound to reality than Jeff so when I saw Young Adult I immediately incorporated it into my mental Dream Meryl Filmography. I juxtaposed it either in 1984 or 1986 with Karen Blixen. Meryl has never played such a part and I was very impressed by Charlise Theron.

I truly hope we hear more for The Good House, I know it will haunt Jeff if it isn't made! Glad the Baby Jane project has gone to be honest. Trusting the Cruella one has been zapped too!

Is this Berlin gig something Meryl will be interviewed at? I was looking forward to seeing her again but I do NOT want her commenting on this overblown diversity issue. Basically any white person who has been asked to comment is being positively eviscerated online. It's a no win situation if you're a successful white person. I don't want any more blows to Meryl's pristine reputation especially after the Suffragette fiasco. I really hate how social media has become a platform for people to take things out of context and basically tear down any public figure who's not PC enough. What ever happened to thoughtful discussion. Everyone is too sensitive nowadays... its as if everything is incredibly offensive and taken too personally.

    1. Can you imagine if Meryl announced that she was going to play Indira Gandhi? The wrath.

    2. I even remember the cries (faint) when she was announced to play Margaret Thatcher and some said it should be a British actress!

I agree, I don't want Meryl to be caught up in this year's awards, they've truly been sullied like never before.

  8. I agree with you when you say it's better Meryl to step aside these year Oscars and next year come back in all her greatness.
However, don't you think Ricki and the Flash could at least be nominated in Best Original Song category? I always thought that it could happen the moment I heard it. Come on, "Cold One" is better than most of this year nominees... And the chimerical idea of having Meryl performing the song live at the Oscars simply amazes me... And she would probably embrace the challenge and give us a memorable performance!

What a lost opportunity this was!

    1. I completely agree that Cold One was a great song. The whole film just seemed like it was a nonstarter for awards consideration.

  9. It would great if Meryl returns to the stage again...she said many years ago that when all her children are grow up she will do more stage productions but apparently it hasn't happened. I just read that Cate Blanchett is appearing in a Broadway play (and I'm sure she will get a Tony nomination) - how fantastic is it? If only Meryl treads the board again. Sigh, I can only wish!
