Alexandre Desplat to score "Florence Foster Jenkins"

This news is a couple days old and normally I wouldn't find this post material, but French composer Alexandre Desplat is reteaming with director Stephen Frears to score Florence Foster Jenkins.  This guy just won the Academy Award for scoring The Grand Budapest Hotel, and has seven additional nominations, including for The Queen and Philomena.  I just enjoy when Meryl's films include the best filmmakers.

This is a good opportunity to reiterate how nice it is that Meryl has joined forces with some great directors over the past two years.  Say what you may about Rob Marshall, but Into the Woods was highly effective.  Jonathan Demme and Frears's credentials are well-known, and we know Meryl would have probably wrapped Master Class by now with Mike Nichols at the helm.  Based on the trailers, Sarah Gavron is also getting a lot of buzz for Suffragette.  Makes me more excited for the possibility of who might direct The Good House if it happens.  Which it better.

  1. Definitely good news for Florence. And apparently there has been at least one screening of Ricki and the Flash- (From twitter)-

At a screening of Jonathan Demme's @RickieMovie the other night. Stunning performances by Meryl Streep and her daughter Mamie Gummer-See it.

    1. Ooo good to know about Ricki. The trailers leave a bit to be desired.

  2. I've seen 2 twitter users that have screened Ricki and both are raves of
Meryl's performance. I hope the film delivers...

    1. Are we sure this was a full screening of the film? I know there was going to be an extended clip at LA Film Fest this weekend, but the tweet from Roger Corman suggests he saw the whole film.

    2. I was wondering that myself. I haven't seen or heard of any screenings. Are we sure these people saw the actual film as opposed to talking about the trailer or clips?

  3. I read a few weeks ago that there was a screening and Anne Hathaway saw it and was just raving about how great it was - the story and Meryl's performance. I am excited and can't wait to see it - she looks like she was having a great time doing that movie and that is great - she can't get nominated for every movie she does (as much as I would like for her to it isn't possible).

    1. See I feel like even if Anne Hathaway did see the film her opinion of the quality would be biased... she is a known fan/admirer of Meryl's and has worked with both Meryl and Demme in the pretty recent past...

  4. I would love if you guys had accounts so it didn't show up as "anonymous." So much easier to get a full sense of opinions and previous dialogue.

    1. This is encouraging - I too love it when Meryl gets on board with established talent as well as newcomers.

Now Helen Mirren is one step closer to EGOT glory I need Meryl to pick up her pace. I understand both Into The Woods and Ricki soundtracks are eligible for Grammy consideration in 2016 - I would love a double nomination and hopefully (finally) a win!

Also, ever since I saw Julianne Moore had "the triple crown" of film festival awards I have wanted Meryl to get a Volpi cup to complete hers, we really need to see one of her films do the rounds soon! Maybe Florence can go to Cannes before it's summer release?

I speculate that if Doubt or The Iron Lady or maybe even August had been shown she would have been rewarded. Let's make traction! :-)
