Streep nominated for Golden Globe

As expected, Meryl was nominated for a Golden Globe this morning for her leading role in August: Osage County.  This comes one day after her nomination from the Screen Actors Guild.  These are essentially the two biggest precursor award to the Oscars.  It'll be interesting to see if Meryl gets a BAFTA nomination in a few weeks but I'm not holding my breath on that one.  Here's the list of Lead Actress nominees in both categories.  No major surprises, with the possible exception of no Adèle Exarchopoulos.  And no Oprah in supporting?! Snap.

Drama
1. Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
2. Sandra Bullock (Gravity)
3. Judi Dench (Philomena)
4. Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks)
5. Kate Winslet (Labor Day)

Musical or Comedy
1. Amy Adams (America Hustle)
2. Julie Delpy (Before Midnight)
3. Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha)
4. Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Enough Said)
5. Meryl Streep (August: Osage County)

  1. I am pleased with this, I see Amy Adams as her biggest threat but I will wait to hear your opinion on American Hustle Jeff before I think more about it.
With her (all but guaranteed) nomination for Into The Woods next year she is so close to 30 in total! :)

Bafta have been showing Meryl a lot of love since 2002. I know there was a 17 year gap when they didn't include her but some of those films were ineligible anyway as they weren't released in the UK.
Plus she holds the record for most film nominations at 14. I think if they don't get too caught up on including Brits on the list then Meryl stands a good chance of getting in.
From what I can tell no one is particularly interested in Labor Day here but there has been minimal coverage of Winslet having her baby in our press.

    1. I think it'll be tough for Meryl to win this, but it's her best chance in any televised award show. Right now I'd probably pick Adams. I'll be seeing AH within the next two weeks. BAFTA I think is a long shot for Meryl. If she gets that nod, I say next to impossible she's snubbed by AMPAS. Don't think Kate Winslet it happening at Oscar. Dench seems solid.

    2. I am not sure how Bafta works because Doubt hadn't been released here before she was nominated. I imagine she will be eligible for the vote anyway since August will be coming here in February I believe.

I agree, it is tougher than it seems since Adams too is going into Comedy and I don't think she has ever won a globe before as well. They may feel Meryl has won enough times for the time being (5 in 10 years).
Who knows, they could surprise us.

It will be a relief to see the Academy continue to nominate her, they tend to lose interest in people at times, especially since they finally gave M her long overdue third recently.

Out of interest, is the role of The Witch a potentially baity role or more of a crowd pleaser? I know very little of the musical

    3. I think a film has to be shown in the UK in the calendar year for it to qualify no? Maybe the dates are a little different. Regardless, I don't expect Meryl to be nominated there.

I've seen the filmed stage performance of Into the Woods with the original Broadway cast on Netflix instant several times. The role of the Witch is probably the most baity, with the Baker's Wife probably considered a lead as well. Bernadette Peters was nominated for a Drama Desk award for it, and the Witch is considered lead with revivals of the play when nominated. Considering Meryl has a new song for her (possible Grammy and Oscar nominations for it), I imagine that if they are going to place her in a category, it will be lead. It's too early to tell if it'll create Oscar buzz, but considering it's Meryl and it's a big name director/cast/budget...how can it not?

  2. Joanna Gleason won the Tony for lead as the Bakers Wife. I have to say its a better role, at least as originally penned.

    1. Yes but on the downside you have to be married to James Corden ;)

  3. Meryl received a critics choice nomination this morning as August took 4 nominations including a supporting actress one for Julia Roberts. Looking good so far for Oscar bids

    1. This indeed does bode well for Meryl's chances at Oscar nomination. With no Adams in the top six, and the fact that I imagine too few Academy members will see Short Term 12, it's looking like the consensus five are strong.

    2. I can't believe she hasn't won anything yet, the last time she won nothing for an Oscar-nominated role was Music of the Heart!

    3. Well, like in 1999 she's got 1-2 performances ahead of her getting pretty dominating recognition. Hilary Swank in 1999 and Cate Blanchett this year. Doesn't help that Meryl won so many things two years ago.

  4. Much as I love Meryl, this is Cate Blanchett's year (whom I also adore equally if not more). I've watched both performances and I must say I prefer Cate's. Somehow, Meryl seems a little over-the-top like her performance in Doubt.

    1. As was pointed out several posts ago, Meryl has stated that she sees this character as a theatrical and over-the-top persona and she incorporated elements of that into her performance. And her Sister Alolysius was incredible actually.

I too have seen Blanchett and she is worthy this year, although I felt Dench packed a bigger punch for me. I am jealous of all those who have seen August so far, we have nothing in the UK yet!

    2. This is absolutely Cate's year. I'm a big fan of her's as well and will be happy for her if/when she takes home Oscar. I just hope Streep is nominated.

In regard to her performance in A:OC, Streep has said in interviews that she felt she had to over the top to capture this woman who is described as an actress and whose histrionics are described in the script as "the shrill insanity of your mother." Meryl said a role like that "you can't really underplay."

  5. I don't know...I mean the character can be theatrical but when I saw August, I had the sense of deja vu of watching Doubt. It's one thing to be theatrical, it's another to be hammy. Don't get me wrong, Meryl gave a good performance but it's just not the same feeling I got when I saw Cate in Blue Jasmine. Somehow I get the feeling that Cate's performance will be construed in the same genre of greatness similar to Meryl's Sophie Choice or Bette Davis' All About Eve. As for Dench, I thought her Notes on a Scandal performance was way more profound than her latest work.
