Streep wins Critics Choice Award

While not in attendance, Streep was awarded the Critics Choice Award last night for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The role of course was for portraying Loretta Durkin in Hulu's third season of Only Murders in the Building. Congratulations, Meryl! The win comes just a couple of days after speculation online that she will return for season four. 

I think it will be shocking at this point if she isn't among the nominees for the Emmys when nominations are announced, likely this summer. Love to see her back on the awards circuit. Here's hoping it continues in the near future in some new and exciting projects!

"Don't Look Up" nabs nominations for Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards. No Meryl.

The newly "revamped" Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its nominations for the Golden Globe Awards this morning. While Meryl was left off the list, it was nice to see that Don't Look Up managed to snag four nods:

Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy

Best Screenplay

Best Actress-Musical or Comedy (Jennifer Lawrence)

Best Actor-Musical or Comedy (Leonardo DiCaprio)

The Critics Choice Awards sort of feels like it wants to take the Globes' place, and even though the Globes won't have their show televised this year, they still feel more important. Regardless, Don't Look Up is up for six there:

Best Picture

Best Acting Ensemble (so Meryl's kind of nominated here ha)

Best Original Screenplay

Best Comedy

Best Song

Best Score

I was surprised to see DiCaprio not make it for Actor with Critics Choice, considering they have six nominees. Nicholas Cage was a surprise there for Pig. They're going to hold their ceremony on January 9, the same day the Globes will announce their winners. There is no confirmation yet on exactly how the Hollywood Foreign Press plans to do that. 

Despite the mixed reviews, it's nice to see that the film looks like it'll be a contender at the Oscars for some of the major categories, particularly Best Picture, Original Screenplay, and Original Song. SAG nominations don't come out for another month (January 12), and Oscar nominations will be announced February 8.

Streep nominated for Critics' Choice Award

Let the season begin...

Nominations have been announced by the Critics' Choice Association for achievement in film and television. Streep has been recognized for her work in HBO's Big Little Lies, with a nomination in the Supporting Actress category. Meryl is joined by her co-star Laura Dern, while Nicole Kidman was nominated in the Lead Actress category.

On the film side, Greta Gerwig's Little Women adaptation came up pretty big as well, with nominations for Best Picture, Director (Gerwig), Lead Actress (Saoirse Ronan), Supporting Actress (Florence Pugh), Adapted Screenplay (Gerwig), Production Design (Jess Gonchor), Costume Design (Jacqueline Durran), Best Score (Alexandre Desplat), and Best Acting Ensemble, for a whopping total of nine nominations!

After the sort of quick fall The Laundromat took in regard to award recognition, it's nice to see Meryl involved in two projects that are getting some attention this awards season. The next few days will be even more telling for both Big Little Lies and Little Women, as Golden Globe nomination will be revealed tomorrow morning, with the Screen Actors Guild noms two days later on Wednesday morning. Fingers crossed for Meryl's chances!

Streep receives record 30th Golden Globe nomination

Breaking her own record, this morning the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated Meryl for the 30th time for a Golden Globe Award.  As expected, Streep was included among the five actresses nominated in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category for her performance in Florence Foster Jenkins.  Excited to see that both Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg were nominated as well, for Actor in a Musical/Comedy and Actor in Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, respectively.  I thought Grant had a pretty good shot here, but wasn't necessarily expecting Helberg.  In addition, the film received a nom for Best Picture Musical/Comedy, so it's nice to see the love for Florence!  

Joining Meryl in her category were:

Annette Bening (20th Century Women)
Lily Collins (Rules Don't Apply)
Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen)
Emma Stone (La La Land)

It's almost a foregone conclusion that Emma Stone will win, but ya never know.  There were a few surprises/omissions that I'll have to let sink in a bit before discussing.  I'm interested to see what peoples' reactions are.

The Globes will be handed out on Sunday, January 8.  Don't forget that Meryl will also be honored with the Cecil  B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement, so even if she doesn't win her category, we'll get to see a bunch of her.  The full list of nominees can be seen here.

In other news, while not in attendance, Streep actually WON the Critics' Choice Award last night for Best Actress in a Comedy.  This is a bit ironic considering my original post attempted to report that she hadn't even been nominated.  This award is super small potatoes in the grand scheme of 'awards season,' but it's nice for her to be recognized regardless.

The Critics' Choice Nominations were announced this morning and unfortunately Meryl was not on the list.  I wasn't necessarily expecting her to make the cut, but considering these are the first of the major televised awards to be announced and that they nominate six actors, it doesn't exactly boost my confidence in Meryl's chances for recognition from other bodies.  The nominations for Actress in a Leading Role were:

Ruth Negga (Loving)
Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Emma Stone (La La Land)

This is a fantastic list and I'm sure all are well-deserving.  So far I've only seen Arrival, but most of the remaining will be accessible within the next month. Meryl's chances should increase considerably in a of couple weeks when the Hollywood Foreign Press reveals their nominees for the Golden Globe Awards.  If Meryl doesn't snag a nod there we can kiss any chance at her 20th Oscar nomination goodbye.
