Deadline is reporting that producer Judy Craymer is confident that a third Mamma Mia! film will come to fruition. In the interview, Craymer, the force behind the stage musical and its subsequent two films, mentioned that Sabrina Carpenter would portray a "goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep." I'm not exactly sure what that means, but it makes me think that Carpenter would be playing a younger version of Meryl or her granddaughter perhaps? I can actually see the resemblance in the photo below.
Craymer flat out confirmed that Meryl would be in the third film, "nodding affirmatively" when asked, and adding "Yeah, she (Meryl) said our after-shooting dinners were legendary. There is a script, but I'm not going there." Craymer also suggested the possibility of a Mamma Mia! television series in the future.
I could of course take it or leave it if Meryl involved herself in this project. But I do like the idea of her being involved in another film that does well at the box office, especially if she has more than a cameo like she did in the sequel. That, combined with the Devil Wears Prada sequel could be a nice boon to her career, which only helps in green-lighting future projects in which Meryl might wish to participate.
Keep 'em comin', Meryl!
You might have seen some media reports that Meryl is eyed for a “voice role” in Nolan’s Odyssey 😒

ReplyDeleteI think that Sabrina will be Sophie's daughter. The question is will she be the protagonist of the film? If the answer is yes, I don't know how Meryl will fit into the movie. And Judy Craymer knows that Meryl is a very important part of Mamma Mia.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think the line Judy says, "Yeah, she (Meryl) said our after-shooting dinners were legendary." It implies that Meryl would love to repeat those dinners that the entire cast had in Greece, something she couldn't do in the second film because of her brief appearance. This already shows more involvement in the project, in the second film she didn't travel to Croatia.
After Meryl (in Cannes) and her manager's statements that they regretted their brief role in the second film, I think she'll be much more involved in this third one. I don't imagine her just appearing as a ghost. Judy Craymer herself said she'd like to show what Donna and Sam's marriage was like in the years after their wedding.
But to be honest, as a Mamma Mia fan, I don't need Sabrina. No more new generations. With Sabrina as the protagonist I can imagine a movie full of teenage dramas.
Ten years ago, I would have been disappointed if Meryl had participated in any sequel or a sequel to the sequel like Mamma Mia 3. Now I can hardly wait, hungry for some Meryl action after the drought. Even though I can't stand Sabrina Carpenter having seen her in Taylor Swift's concert, bad voice, zero charisma, just pretty that's all, I will watch because of Meryl and the rest of the old cast.
ReplyDeleteWho cares about Sabrina ?? We need Meryl and her Merylicious gifts!!😍
