Looks like it's actually going to happen, people. Sources are reporting that Disney has set an official release date of May 1, 2026 for The Devil Wears Prada 2. I can only imagine that filming will therefore have to take place sometime starting this summer or early fall at the latest.
Hurray! While I'm not necessarily a big fan of Meryl going sequels, her output has been pretty quiet the last few years, and this project has the potential to really get things going for her again. It also makes sense that they're releasing it in 2026, as that will be a tidy twenty years since the original. That might help a little with the marketing campaign for the film. I really hope the script is solid, because if this becomes a box office hit, just like after the original, Meryl could be besieged with offers for new projects. I recognize that the landscape is a little different for a 75 year-old than for a 55 year-old, but I also know that many of the best scripts/projects these days for actors are on television compared to film, which was not the case in 2006.
I'm looking forward to getting more details on the official casting announcements and shooting schedule. And what will Miranda look like this time around? As an aside, I also wonder if The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the official movie title. I'd kind of prefer something a little more interesting like The Devil (Still) Wears Prada (or something like that but better). Not a huge deal, it just screams so tent-pole pic vs something that might actually have some weight to it from a character perspective. either way, just glad that Meryl's getting out there for something big again.
Necessity aside, I am excited to be able to walk into a movie theatre, buy a ticket and watch Meryl on the big screen for the 1st time for me since December 2019...it's been a long time coming!

ReplyDeleteWonderful news! Meryl in a potentially big hit!
ReplyDeleteFinally!!!!! Yes! I hope that this time is the real deal! Can't wait to see the elegant Meryl Diva again!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to a new-look Miranda! I really hope Meryl has a big part and not a glorified cameo.
DeleteI just can't imagine Meryl wouldn't at least be co-lead here. It seems like it would be so foolish of the filmmakers to not have her prominently featured. So much of the legacy of the first film and its success is based on how memorable/quotable Miranda is.
DeleteAnd in case if Meryl won't be in the cast, it's not worth watching...just my opinion.
Deleteyou can look up the summary, it's Miranda having to deal with the decline of print media so obviously she's in it, why would they even do it without her when Miranda is so iconic, no need to even entertain that thought
DeleteYes of course it should be 100% Meryl! But anything can happen in Hollywood.... maybe the character stays but the actor changes... There were so many bad news in the last year ... and Meryl hasn't been in a movie since 2021. And she is 76... I am waiting for her since...forever...to be back.
Deleteindeed, it makes no sense to do a Mamma Mia 2 kind of cameo
ReplyDeleteI’m really hoping for the best here. If the synopsis going around is true, about how the story can be about the decline of Miranda, it can be an interesting character study on power and how it corrupts and diminishes. I remember around the time it was released, Meryl talked about how she wanted to make the film more about work. It will be interesting to see the film’s take on today’s work culture.
