Streep honored with Princess of Asturias award

Multiple outlets are reporting that Meryl has been awarded Spain's prestigious Princess of Asturias award. According to Wikipedia, the award is given to "individuals, entities or organizations from around the world who make notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, and public affairs." Notable winners in recent years are Bob Dylan, Pedro Almodóvar, Michael Haneke, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola. Not a lot of ladies. The award comes with a prize of 50,000 euros and is set to be presented at a ceremony in Spain in October. No word yet on whether or not Meryl will attend.

This recognition probably has nothing to do with anything else, but along with the recent Streep Performing Arts Center dedication by SAG and the anticipation of Meryl's work in season 3 of Only Murders in the Building, it almost feels like there's a bit of a PR push the likes of which we see when people are making little comebacks. Not that Meryl really needs a comeback, but she's been sort of "quiet" in the last couple of years (I know, I know she's taken similar breaks), and I've speculated that 2021 in particular felt like she sort of just dropped out of all rumored or announced work. It seems like we might be ripe for a big announcement on an exciting project in the coming months. Here's hopin'!

Congratulations on your award, Meryl. Well-deserved as usual.

  1. But none of those rumored works were really that essential or critically great?

    1. I'm thinking of Babylon, Places Please and Beau is Afraid. None were locks for her participation, but ended up (or are ending up) with others in the roles. All rather high-profile projects, regardless of the end result.

  2. I wish I can be excited about Meryl's appearance in Murders in The Building but I'm not because I can't stand that series having watched the first two episodes of Season 1. The script seems to be written with every aspect to a T, yes, much like Gilmore Girls - either you love it or you hate it. In my fandom word, I consider Meryl's participation as just a warm-up for something in the near future more worthy of her talent. When I watched Emma Thompson in Good Luck to You Leo Grande and Cate Blanchett in Tar, I secretly wish Meryl would take on such fearless-like roles in this phase of her career, not Don't Look Up or The Laundromat. The best French actresses are lucky because no matter what age, they have great scripts awaiting them. In Hollywood, not so much. Also, like you said, Meryl may have some personal matters that had caused her to drop out for quite a while. Hopefully, someone will write a play like Summer 1976 to lure her back to stage or a great movie to get her wheels spinning again at her peak.

    1. Totally agree re Leo Grande and Tar, both great examples. Like I'm sure many of Meryl's co-actors have said over the years or have experienced with her is that she's a bit of a mystery. I wonder if she understands or realizes that her most hungry audience is the only group of people who bemoan times like this, where she hasn't done something that whets our Streep appetites, but that she knows works well for her personally and professionally. I tend to think she REALLY wants to keep acting in screen roles with great directors and exceptional scripts depicting interesting and complex women of her generation. We'll see it.

    2. Pedro nominated her for this award so perhaps that is her next great auteur collaboration! I'm on this train with no plans to get off!
