First trailer leaked(?) for "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again"

Last night, I noticed on Awards Watch that someone had linked the first trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. I tried to play it, but it had already been removed by NBC, making me think that it was a leaked version, or at least a video that someone had taken of the trailer with their phone. Regardless, there were still multiple Twitter accounts that posted the trailer so I watched it, and I can understand why fans of Meryl are pissed. There is almost no original footage of her.

In addition, the way the other characters talk about Donna (Streep's role) in the trailer strongly suggests that she has been killed off from the original. Many of us have been speculating in the past couple months about the extent to which Meryl is even in this movie, and now it seems that what role she has may be incredibly small. This is too bad, as most promotional coverage or news articles that have come out tend to lead with the fact that she's participating, suggesting a much larger role than we apparently now know she has.

I'm not as devastated as most of the Twitter posters I've read so far, as my initial awareness of Meryl signing on for this in May sort or irritated me. But with the incredible box office success of the 2008 original, it seemed reasonable that she'd join, if not just for a cameo.

It'll be interesting to see when the trailer is officially released and we get more clarity on this topic. But as it stands now, it looks like Meryl will have very little in the works for actual screen time in 2018, expecting her role in Mary Poppins Returns to be quite small as well.

  1. There is some original material - with Meryl performing in white and then one scene with her daughter but minimal- Jamie

    1. Ooo, you're right, Jamie. When they compare all the actors as young and then older versions. I should correct the post.

  2. Both roles (Mamma Mia 2 and Mary Poppins 2) are quite small. Any news on the future projects with Meryl leading, Jeff?
    Tks!

    1. Sadly, there is nothing. The only real prospect for something currently unfilmed is the limited TV series The Nix, but having read the book, that doesn't seem like a lead role.

Of course, I'm still pining for The Good House, and maintain that it would be a wonderful role based on a fictional character. And then there's always Nyad, the blacklist script from two years ago, but that's just wishful thinking. I looked through the top films on this year's blacklist, and while there are a LOT involving women, none that stood out for someone of Meryl's "generation."

  3. I saw the trailer too and it came across as quite odd with old scenes added in.

I didn't get the sense she was dad - why would they want to kill off the main character (and lots of people's reason for seeing this) but I agree her involvement and the time she spent actually working on this seems minimal.

I am guessing now the hair she had in the original was a wig as it looks much the same in the new footage?

I don't much care for Cher's arrival in the helicopter - I never got the sense Donna was from a wealthy family. Anyone I was pleased to see Cher but I did imagine she would only be seen in flashbacks as she and Meryl are so close in age. Nevertheless, since Meryl and the others were (technically speaking) too old for the roles anyway.

I hope at least she gets one great solo number and one duet (with Cher or The Dynamos). Not Pierce please. Hehe. Anyway I will still go see it.

I just hope Meryl doesn't go on another break again after The Post is done and dusted!

    1. I also hope for solo number and one with Dynamos. However, I don't think Meryl will be singing with Cher, at least not on screen, as her answer to question:"Will you be doing a duet with Cher?" was "Well, we did many duets, but they were at the bar"

  4. Also, as an aside, didn’t Donna say “Someone up there really has it in for me.. I bet it’s my mother!”
Has she been resurrected for one night, and one night only?!

  5. I also have seen that leaked trailer and I honestly don't know what to think about it...apart from you, Jeff, I am in love with the original film, Donna is one of my most favorite characters and especially I love Meryl's singing though as a hardcore ABBA fan I am saying this very rarely...
but back to the 'trailer': There are so many RUMORS going around Donna's character for months; the most frequent is that Donna is dead and the whole story is told as a narrative through probably Tanya's/Rosie's eyes or she's away hence the flashes taking us from her past to the point we all know the story already.
But as I said, it is based on rumors so we'll have to wait until they reveal more or for the film premiere itself. Meryl is present in the film but she’s not in it much because her filming only took about a week...
What totally strucked me was Cher: some might find her entrance funny, but I was like WTH; I mean bringing a grandmother who kicked off her own daughter after she told her she's pregnant? Gosh, give me a break...I am really curious about her singing Fernando, that's a mystery to me how its lyrics might fit the story...
Also what didn't fit at all are the young characters of Sam, Bill and Harry - all so young here, no hippie looks as they were seen in the original film.
oops sorry for such long reply :-)

  6. As for Meryl's future: not long ago Greta Gerwig said, “I’m meeting her (Meryl) next week,” Greta says.
“You’re going to direct Meryl Streep?
” I say. “I;m writing something for her. Listen, you gotta aim high!”

    1. Yes, of course. The Gerwig meeting happened a couple weeks ago, but who even knows what that is, or if it's a lead role.

    2. I agree... And would take, if filmed in the first semester of 2018, at least 2 years to be released...

  7. The first official trailer for Mamma Mia 2 will be released tomorrow, Dec 21.
"The Wrap" videoclip was released today...

  8. So sad that every thing in this movie suggests that Donna is dead all her appearances are just characters memories. However, this is, most of all, a prequel...

Also sad for this outrageous and abject campaign against Meryl, but I think she is overcoming this situation stronger and more loved by her fans.
