Full cast of characters revealed for "The Papers"

I was checking out Awards Watch this morning and noticed that someone had posted that the full cast of The Papers had been revealed.  There was no source cited, so I checked IMDbPro, but several actors' names are still not associated with specific characters.  Wikipedia, however, does now list the main cast and whom each will be playing:

Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee
Meryl Streep as Kay Graham
Alison Brie as Lally Weymouth
Carrie Coon as Meg Greenfield
David Cross as Phil Geyelin
Bruce Greenwood as Robert McNamara
Tracy Letts as Paul Ignatius
Bob Odenkirk as Ben Bagdikian
Sarah Paulson as Tony Bradlee
Jesse Plemons as Roger Clark
Matthew Rhys as Howard Simons
Michael Stuhlbarg as Gene Patterson
Bradley Whitford as Fritz Beebe
Zach Woods as Daniel Ellsberg

No surprises here, really. With the exception of Hanks and Streep, the list is essentially made up of great television actors.  This list looks like a wonderful recipe for a SAG ensemble nomination.  Assuming the film is decent, the only thing standing if the way of that would be if screeners don't get out to members in time for voting to end on December 10, considering the film just wrapped less than a month ago. SAG noms are set to be announced on December 13. The film opens in limited release on December 22, going wide on January 12.

  3. Are you sure about the list because The Papers article by Mark Shanahan at the www.Bostonglobe.com indicates that the third important role..the Daniel Ellsberg one is played by Matthew Rhys.

    1. Nope, I'm not sure about the list. As I mentioned, there wasn't a source listed, and yes, Wikipedia is reader edited so it's possibly wrong. I cannot find the Globe article online. Does it say who Zach Woods plays? He does seem a little young for Ellsberg.

  4. You might try google..Globe will have a piece of Spielberg' Papers'.

    1. Yes, I definitely Googled it. Nothing current about the Globe piece that came up.

  5. And the recent article by Kristopher Tapley at Variety indicates that Carrie Coon plays the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Meg Greenfield role. So as of now, we only know who Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Matthew Rhys and Carrie Coon play for sure I guess.

    1. Yes, Carrie Coon's role is cited in the post above.
IMDbPro also lists Alison Brie as Lally, Ben Odenkirk as Bob Bagdikian and many others. It's a huge cast. I placed a post on Awards Watch asking for the source of the cast list. Someone has to know for sure.

  6. Limited release? Meaning only major cities?

  7. It's the same strategy for American Sniper and American Hustle.

  8. Limited for oscar qualification this year and going wide after the golden globes awards and oscar nominations. Seems like they are pretty sure about this one!

  9. THIS SITE will be on fire again rooting for Meryl at the end of the year...thanks to you, Jeff.

  10. Could Meryl possibly win a 4th Oscar? Seems incomprehensible......

    1. She will. With an undeniable role or good timing. I think Nyad could be a role that requires so much from her it would be hard to resist..

    2. I don't know if she for sure will for this role, but the possibility is there. Charlie, yes to Nyad!

  11. I don't think she'll ever win no. 4. That was K. Hepburn's honour. Meryl's been recognised more than anyone, I imagine she'll go out with 24, twice as many nominations as the two actors in 2nd place.

    1. I disagree it was a meant as a specific honour to Katherine Kepburn. She just got lucky with her timing and the sentimentality of the Academy. If The Lion in Winter had been 1967 and Guess who's coming to dinner? was 1968 she would have been unlikely to win for the latter. And On Golden Pond was more a career achievement to two old stars.

Plus you're forgetting The Academy is made up of many people not around from those times. The thinking has changed somewhat.

If Meryl were to win another Best Actress Oscar within the next 5-10 years and assuming she keeps acting, she could well get a 5th when she's a lot older. Or if 2 amazing roles come alone in the next few years it could be even quicker! Never count her out just because she has so many 'losses'..

    2. Charlie, I completely agree with all of this. I think there's very little chance she'd have won for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner had its release year been switched with Lion in Winter.

  12. I want six. Kidding. She has enough as it is but we still want her to win more!

    1. If we judge each performance on its merits alone, not factoring in prior honours, she should have 6 already!

    2. For me, she should have got two more from The Bridges of Madison County and The Devil Wears Prada. That two roles are so iconic.Jack

  13. I bet Meryl will win one more to tie with Hepburn but maybe not for a role in The Papers (gut feel). Nyad or something of Sophie's or Devil's standard...think she will have 24 or 25 by the end of her career if she goes on making movies. David

    1. Everything is in her favor to win for The Papers, I don't understand why people are downplaying her so much.

  14. Jeff - Forget about The Papers for now, Universal just announces the starting of the principal photography on Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. It's a top-notch project in every departments! Jack

    1. I hope you're right, Jack. I wasn't a huge fan of the original so the sequel in my mind likely won't be any worse. It would be a bonus if it didn't suck and did well at the box office. I'm still way more looking forward to The Papers, though.

    2. All in all, it will be the busiest year for Meryl fan with three big movies to root for starting from this coming christmas to christmas 2018. Who would have thought? Jack

  15. I think Meryl should have won for Silkwood and Cry in the Dark. Two brilliant performances. Shame
    on the Academy!

    1. For sure Cry in the Dark. Maybe Bridges too if Sarandon hadn't been overdue.

  16. Yeah. Meryl had no chance for a Silkwood win w/the juggernaut of Mclaine & Winger in Terms. Shirley
    was a deserving winner.

  17. The cast is wrong. David Cross said in a interview that he's playing Howard Simons.

      Check the last part:
      - Can you say anything about who you're playing?
      - Yeah, I play [former Washington Post managing editor] Howard Simons.
