Poll #3: Which film would you remove from Meryl's filmography?

If any of you have read my reimagined filmography of Meryl's career, you know I've spent way too much a lot of time pondering which movies of hers I'd replace or simply remove, given the chance.  As it's been a few weeks since I've posted a poll and a few readers have had the same suggestion on what the next one should be, off to the side you'll see the latest question.  Feel free to add your explanations for your choices in the comments section as usual.  I'm going to leave voting open for two weeks this time.

  1. Dark Matter , it's just a mediocre role for the Great Meryl whose talent seemed to be wasted in the controversial film.

    1. I imagine a lot of people don't really like this film, but Meryl speaks Mandarin in part of it!

  2. I wouldn't remove any movie from Meryl's filmography. Maybe it's not perfect and there are some movies that I don't like at all/hate. But throughout the years she made a lot of decisions in a lot of different cicumstances. I accept every single one of her choices and try to the same with movies.

    1. One of my favorite things about Meryl is her rationale for projects she chooses and what draws her to characters. What I've often found is that some of her films that many of us don't highly regard were probably lesser of two or three evils for where she was in her career or geographically with her family. Considering how long her career has been, no one has done better.

    3. The poll is just a bit of fun :) Of course she did some for the money! Haha, just kidding...

I picked The House of the Spirits because:

      1. Very people saw it/know it
      2. It was borderline controversial for the white casting element
      3. It wasted many great names
      4. No attempts at accents
      5. Didn't do justice to acclaimed source material
      6. Took a long time to make on location (I believe)
      7. It's boring!

The Remains of the Day was released in the same year as this to a much more rapturous welcome. Salt in the wounds.

  3. Dark Matter for sure. A terribly disappointing movie. When she first announced she was going to make a movie with a Chinese director, I was elated (being an Asian myself). But then, I realized that director was ShiZheng who's not as well regarded as many others in the Asian community. Still, I kept my hope afloat thinking the movie may be just as serviceable as 3 Times (arguably his best effort). But alas, after I watched Dark Matter, I just shook my head over and over in disappointment. For the record, Meryl's Mandarin, what little of it, wasn't even spot-on. David.

    1. I have no ability to discern the quality of Mandarin, but she was playing someone who was just learning to speak it!

    2. My bad. You're right-that's her character. Thanks for pointing it out. I think my massive disappointment with this movie overwhelms any objectivity. Just read another post about removing Plenty. NO WAY! That's one of my favourite (and largely underrated) performances. David.

  4. Still of the night, for sure. I think even she regrets it.

  5. I'm one of those people who have seen nearly all of Streep's films and out of all of them I think Before and After is her weakest performance. However she has stated why that might have been due to the filming style of the director. Worst hairdo goes to Still of the Night though :p

  6. Still of the Night and Before and After- think those are two choices that may have been bad- Jamie

  9. Awww...sorry for that, Jeff but I can't find any chemistry when I watched it. But let me change it to Mamma Mia. And that would make many Meryl's fans disagree

    1. Ha you're free to take out whichever film you want! I just enjoy how complex Meryl's character in Plenty is. I prefer it to Mamma Mia! actually. But you're right, you'd get a few squabbles if you took out that film.

  10. Keep up the poll of another Meryl's filmography. Always follow and really appreciate your blog

  11. As this is about film and not a performance I'd choose the diabolical Iron Lady. An actor in a calibre of her own should have won her third Iscar with a film that matched her brilliance. One of our greatest talents have the extra obligation of elevating substandard work.
Imagine if Stephen Frears has done the Thatcher biopic?
