Streep lands SAG nomination

Woo hoo!  Meryl received a nomination from the Screen Actors Guild this morning for her performance in Florence Foster Jenkins.  Her co-star Hugh Grant was also recognized in the supporting category.  This is a very good sign for Meryl's chances at her 20th Academy Award nomination next month.  I'm pretty sure the only other time she was nominated for both a Golden Globe and SAG and didn't get an Oscar nomination was for 1994's The River Wild.  Joining Meryl in her category were the following actresses:

Amy Adams (Arrival)
Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train)
Natalie Portman (Jackie)
Emma Stone (La La Land)

I'm rather surprised by Blunt making the top five.  I was more expecting Annette Bening.  Stone and Portman were slam dunks, and I think those two and Adams are at this point shoe-ins for Oscar noms.  The Academy will announce their nominations on Tuesday, January 24.   The full list of SAG nominations can be seen here.

"Look, darling, we're both nominated."

  1. Haha I love the caption of that pic! So pleased she made it in, I'd say she was number 3/4 out of the particular list.

She was also nominated for a Golden Globe and SAG for Best Cast for Marvin's room but was surplanted by Diane Keaton at The Oscars so not quite the same as this time. Potentially she could have been nominated for a SAG for The Hours but we all know what happened that year!

I too am surprised Blunt made it in, was thinking Bening was part of the trio of slam dunks. It must be quite tense for actors and studios when their awards campaigns don't seem to be going to plan. Anyway, I just hope the renewed attention push sales of Florence.

    1. Ha thanks for noticing the photo caption. I'm curious too if with the re-release we'll get any substantial increase in tickets for the film.

  2. Love it!- I do think with Frears she has a good chance at BAFTA as well! - Jamie

    1. Agreed. It's been since Iron Lady for Meryl at BAFTA. But the UK connection: Frears, Grant, filmed there...should really help.

  3. Well I see Goldie Hawn was cast in the role that some suggested Meryl might play in "Snatched". The trailer is rather crude though - might not have been a great choice? It seems from the article that Schumer always had Hawn in mind but who knows how truthful that is? It's not like she has Meryl's box office appeal for a start..

Anyway, hope the film given her a good comeback!

    1. I agree. The trailer doesn't really make me want to see it, and I'm less disappointed that Meryl wasn't involved. We'll see how it does at the box office. Good for Goldie if it does well.

  4. I was wondering given their successes if we could speculate that Meryl might have been approached for the Helen Mirren role in Collateral Beauty? Frankel must have had some say in the casting and Meryl wasn't exactly busy when it was filmed. Hmm..

    1. Perhaps, but thank goodness she wasn't involved as it's bombing with critics and audiences.

    2. Abso-fucking-lutly as Big might say. Was just pondering what famous yet terrible scripts Meryl might have been presented with over the years..

    3. I'm sure there have been several. Meryl has said a few times that she, like most actresses, reads 2-3 things a year that she could possibly stand to be involved in. Even when something seems good on paper it can still be a stinker. If the script is lousy, unlikely to get Meryl involved. She's in a very fortunate place, where she's likely always in the top three for conversation if the role could feasibly be portrayed by a woman in her demographic.

    4. Yes absolutely,I wonder if she regrets any of the roles she was offered that she didn't take. I'm sure she's sorry to have missed Thelma and Louise but that's a different story..
