Streep garnering Oscar buzz for "Florence Foster Jenkins"

Among other sources today, Variety has reported on the screening of Florence Foster Jenkins that took place last night at Carnegie Hall.  Evidently Paramount is trying to generate early buzz leading up to the film's August 12 release here in the States.  The film, which was introduced by my favorite soprano Renée Fleming, evidently began to generate awards consideration predictions among the attendees, particularly for Meryl of course.  Following the screening, Meryl participated in a Q&A with costume designer William Ivey Long, of which I unfortunately cannot find video!  I'll add that if it ever turns up.

As we all know, this would be Streep's 20th Academy Award nomination.  Combined with the fact that the film already holds 91% on Rotten Tomatoes with 47 reviews, Meryl is a shoe-in for at least a Golden Globe nod and will be in the conversation for Oscar, which makes my awards season that much more enjoyable.  If this were to do well at the box-office, we may be looking at prospects for Hugh Grant as well.

  1. Hooray! Let's keep our fingers crossed. Have you watched the Tony award ceremony? Wouldn't it be great if Meryl and Glenn Close had shown up as Trump and Hillary respectively for the skit?

    1. I did not watch the Tons ,but yes, anything with Meryl would've been fabulous.

  2. It would have been more great if Meryl puts her foot on the boards again soon and is at the ceremony as a nominee!

Hamilton sounds amazing by the way! And indeed Meryl deserves this buzz, I hope Paramount lead an excellent lead-out for Florence - it deserves to flourish!

    1. Yes I've been waiting impatiently for her to return to stage. She will do wonders I bet. Just look at Cate Blanchett, she's equally lauded on screen and stage.

  3. Hello Jeff, Thank you for this great blog and keeping us updated! Your blog is always one of the first places I go to for news and info on the wonderful Meryl Streep. Like you (and many other of course) I really like her and her work. She's my favourite actress. Such a talent and of what I can tell a really great person. I'm really looking forward to seeing "Florence Foster Jenkins". From the first moment I read about the film project I was intriged by the lady and her story and the prospect of a movie being made about her. And I felt Meryl could do her justice. And by all the trailers and clips it really seems she has. It all looks really good to me. I'm glad to see the film and particularly Meryl's performance gets so much positive response. I do hope she gets award nominations for her role as Florence. I agree that a golden globe nom will probably happen, maybe even a win, but that will also depend on the other nominees as well of course. And Meryl has won many times already of course. I also hope she will get her 20th oscar nomination. That will be harder of course. I would really like to see her win a 4th oscar some day. But like you and others have also said it would probably be too soon for that anyway and would take something really special to award her for a fourth time. Three oscars is really amazing as well and enough if it should stay that way and well deserved I think. Always felt she had to win a third and glad she did for "The Iron Lady". But it would be great if it should happen one day. This next upcoming award season is already decided probably, I would think. Because if, and it looks to be very likely, "Fences" with Viola Davis comes out this year, Viola Davis will almost certainly win. Like you and the others here I'm looking forward to new film projects and other projects with Meryl. To finish this long post, hope you don't mind that it's gotten this long, I would like to say that I absolutely love "The French Leutenant's Woman" (hope I wrote that right, always struggle with that title, lol), the film esspecially the film in the film part, and Meryl's mesmerizing performance move me in it! Best Regards, R
