First full trailer for "Florence Foster Jenkins"

Pathé UK has given us the first full-length trailer for Florence Foster Jenkins:

They're definitely holding out on letting us hear the really bad singing, which is probably a good strategy.  I'm going to have to let the trailer sink in a bit more but one thing I'll say is that I'm looking forward to Meryl portraying someone a little less eccentric soon.  Let me know your thoughts!

  1. Looks awesome! Especially the Brunhilda bit.

  2. They subtly implied that Florence has syphilis, you can see it during the last parts of the trailer; I'm pleased that they have included that bit, because it was part of Florence Foster Jenkins' story and the reason behind her horrible singing.

    1. Ooo I didn't catch that. I've read that many think the syphilis affected her hearing, which affected her ability to sing well.

    2. Indirectly, it was the mercury treatments for tertiary syphilis (it attacked her central nervous system and it's unresponsive to drugs) that has affected her hearing; rendering her tone-deaf and bald from it lol.

  3. Jeff, I share your sentiments about wishing Meryl will assume a less eccentric role soon. The Good House will be an excellent start to her next phase of career (avoiding the likes of Violet Weston, Into The Woods witch, and this one). Hopefully no more biopics for a while and no more over-the-top personas. I was re-watching her earlier movies like Silkwood and Plenty - wow she could muster a scene with silence and say more than she ever did in a scenery-chewing one.

  4. All of this is right, and I see your points of view, but I think you are not taking into account the personal Meryl wishes and interests right now. She uses to stay that she wants to feel challenged by a new role, but also that she needs to have fun with that role. So, I believe that, even though it would be awesome to see her in more subtle and strongly emotional roles, I'm afraid she will keep doing over-the-top characters.
(As far as I'm concerned, nothing against it!)

    1. Yes I hear you....and I think Meryl has every right to have fun in whatever stage in her artistic journey. Having said that, I personally view this phase in her career (after Devil Wears Prada) as her most hammy albeit financially rewarding. It's mostly acting with a capital A (think diCaprio after Catch me if you can). That's just my opinion anyway. Let's hope she does The Good House (I've read the book) and I think it'll a good start to a new phase judging by what I've read.

    2. This is Meryl talking about how she wants to be theatrical (big gestures) yet rooted in emotion...I think she has certainly achieved it of late...Iron Lady, Doubt, August Osage, Julie & Julia, even Hope Springs to a certain extent....

    4. Thanks for the link! Great thoughts from Meryl as usual. She's of course fabulous in everything she does, my wish to see something a bit more subtle is probably influenced by critics, but also by my interest in continuing to see Meryl in varied roles. I need to stop getting my hopes up for The Good House.

  6. With Noomi Rapace playing Maria Callas, does this eliminate all hope for Meryl playing her?

    1. Keep in mind that these are difference projects. I don't think Rapace's role eliminates all hope for Meryl playing Callas, but I do believe Mike Nichols's death eliminated all hope of her being in Master Class.

  7. I would love it if Meryl could help produce Masterclass, she's done it before for TV and it sounded like a great project. Shame it hasn't been pursued.

I really like the trailer - it hints at some emotional depth that Meryl can do so well alongside the comedy and entertainment value. I am with everyone who also wants substantial pieces which will stand the test of time now, let's see what's next.

I also read a vague rumour Florence might go to Cannes before being released in America, that would be exciting!
