The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced its nominations for film and television excellence and as expected, Meryl has been nominated for her role in Into the Woods. This comes off the heels of her SAG nomination just yesterday. This puts her in very good standing for an Academy Award nomination next month. Streep currently holds the record for Globe wins with eight.
I realized that I didn't mention my Globe predictions in yesterday's post, so I can't really say whether all my guesses made it in, but I feel validated that my SAG guesses ended up being 5/5 for the Globes. Ha. The full list in Meryl's category is as follows:
1. Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)
2. Jessica Chastain (A Most Violent Year)
3. Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game)
4. Emma Stone (Birdman)
5. Meryl Streep (Into the Woods)

I am of course pleased that she was nominated but feel she stood a better chance in Musical/Comedy, especially since Mirren was good but nothing amazing in her film and Annie looks dreadful. Anyway, I hope Emily Blunt gets it, Amy Adams had her go validation year.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised Aniston has been pushed in Drama where she has a much smaller chance of a win. From the trailer "Cake" looks like a dramedy along the lines of August: Osage County. Anyway, the nomination were pretty decent except poor Bradley Cooper must be feeling the burn along with Angelina Jolie.
Anyway, with another loss this year I hope it builds Meryl up for a double nomination and possibly a double win next year?! :)
Til then if she loses everything else for Woods I really hope she gets The Bafta. The fact she only has 2 when others are on 5 or 6 is incredible.

ReplyDeleteIt looks like Arqette will win everything else but BAFTA may go outside the box.
Meryl doesn't have a great record with BAFTA. I just hope she gets nominated. A win would be nice. It was filmed in the UK.
DeleteNo, not at all. From Out of Africa to The Hours she wasn't even nominated at all. I'm not sure if some of her films weren't released here in the UK but it's shocking.
DeleteShe could easily have won for A Cry In The Dark as the category wasn't especially strong that year. The also weirdly nominated her for Manhattan and Best Lead Actress for The Deer Hunter. Meryl is huge here though so fingers crossed..
But she did not get nomination for August Osage County.
ReplyDeleteTotally. I think her chances for a BAFTA nod are better for Into the Woods than for A:OC, but still not great. And I actually think Meryl has a better chance of getting an Oscar nom than BAFTA.
DeleteMeryl didn't get a BAFTA nod for August because they wanted to honour Emma Thompson and Judi Dench and this pushed Meryl out.
DeleteAlthough they are generally improving they have always tended towards British talent whenever they can jusitfy it.
Tended? Their bias toward Brits is pervasive. I don't think there's anything bad about that. It's just huge.
