Episode 8 of "Only Murders in the Building"--season 5

Meryl's character of Loretta returned for episode 8 of Hulu's Only Murders in the Building last night. It was interesting in that the majority of the episode centered on Loretta, Mabel (Selena Gomez), Williams (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), Lorraine (Dianne Wiest) and Camila (Renée Zellweger). They have a sort of ladies night in the casino in the basement of the Arconia, with Loretta, Mable, Williams and Lorraine intent on getting a confession out of Camila for killing Lester.

Loretta pretends to be a psychic (with an Eastern European/Russian accent I think) in an attempt to get some information from Camila. I have to admit I'm sort of blind to a lot of the details of the plot of this show at this point because I find them so insane and uninteresting, but it was definitely fun to see Meryl onscreen again with Zellweger, after their pairing in 1998's gem One True Thing (which I just watched this past weekend because it reminds me a lot of this time of year).

Two episodes left of this series season. I suppose Loretta will show up in at least one more before she "heads back" to New Zealand (yawn).

Here's hoping the rumors of Useful Idiots, the Joni Mithcell biopic and/or The Corrections actually come to fruition so that Meryl can be delivered of this material. Sorry to be negative, guys. I'm sure she's had/having a blast filming Murders, but it is exceedingly tedious at this point. Looking forward to more interesting things for her.

  2. Anyone knows why Streep didn't make any comment about Keaton's passing?

    1. She did: "Diane Keaton, our American treasure...
Crushing news that she is gone, but her smile and her style and antic spirit will live on film and in our hearts forever."

  3. Amen Jeff. Exceedingly tedious!

  4. You speak the truth!Murders is murdering us with the plot actually! Meryl should get back into business! Real business! Well I guess she just got back with TDWP2! Waiting for the 22nd nomination 😉

  5. I don't mean to be a party-pooper but TDWP2 is not going to get her the 22nd. The landscape of nominations has changed quite a bit with very heavy-duty stuff in the past few years. Maybe Joni or something with gravitas will land her the 22nd.

    1. If she doesn't deserve a nomination for her great role in TDWP2 then nobody in that movie should deserve it...

    2. DWP2 could get her that 22nd nom. If Meryl puts a twist on a now iconic character, it will be more revelatory than her just turning in another great performance in a new role. Best Actress might be more competitive, but she could go supporting, which is far less. It will depend on how successful the film is and how much Meryl wants to campaign for the nomination. We also don’t know how she feels about her career as a leading actor anymore. She might use DWP2 as her On Golden Pond moment. Although, if she does, I’d rather her win a final Best Actress, not supporting. The 2027 Oscars will take place nearly a decade after her last nomination - this could be helpful to the narrative and maybe the easiest shot she has to make that moment happen, if she wants it (and I suspect she does).

    3. Yeah I agree that it's not impossible for Meryl to get a nom for DWP2. By no means a sure thing, but how you touched on the "twist on a now iconic character," I was just talking about the role with a friend who's not necessarily into Meryl but likes the TDWP, and she even agreed that for Meryl to sign on to the sequel, there's likely something special or different about Miranda as a character that was worth Meryl exploring as an actor. If that's the case, it could be a more compelling performance worthy of awards traction.

With the buzzings of Useful Idiots and The Joni Mitchell biopic as well (and The Corrections TV project--please happen my gawd how can this story be so hard to get made?!), I feel good about us seeing Meryl in high quality things, perhaps even as a lead, in the future. If some of these come to fruition soon, the biggest thing it shows me is that Meryl is still hungry for new and interesting roles.

  6. The description of the movie that says Miranda needs Emily’s advertising dollars definitely implies a significant shift in the original power dynamics. I’d love to see a desperate, unfurling, has-been Miranda. Even better - a disgraced Miranda clinging on to her reputation.

    1. Miranda Priestly, will never be a has-been or disgraced cmon, they can explore what you mean without going that far, just Miranda showing some cracks

  7. Sigourney Weaver made a comment regarding Useful Idiots in an interview for Empire UK magazine. She said it's going to shoot in the beginning of Jan 2026 and she's playing Meryl's best friend.
