Streep to receive honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival

Multiple sources are reporting that Meryl will be presented with an honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival later this month. Streep's last visit to Cannes was when she was awarded the Best Actress prize for 1988's A Cry in the Dark. The award will be presented on the first night of the festival.

Honors like this help to bolster the public perception of Meryl's greatness, which I hope only adds to the likelihood that she'll continue to be offered (and be interested in taking) worthwhile projects well into the future. It'll be fun if we get a video of the ceremony. The festival runs May 14-25. Congratulations, Meryl!

  2. She has been accepting lifetime achievement awards for the past 20 years. Who would have thought that her AFI tribute in 2004 was actually just the midway point of her career!

  3. I can't fathom Meryl being on the road to retirement at this time when she still seems to be fit and loving the spotlight. The lack of interesting roles could be the biggest factor behind this unusual lull in her movie career.

  4. We all have in us something of Meryl Streep, president of Cannes fest said.
It s a wise and true line.

  5. It will be interesting if Meryl were to work with international auteurs in this phase of her career, something that's lacking in her body of work. I recall she did work with one for Ironweed (am I right?) and maybe a few others but definitely not in the scale of Cate Blanchett of even Nicole Kidman. Who knows? She may even meet a few interested directors when she receive her award in France.

  7. Beautiful Cannes ceremony today! Also The Great Lillian Hall has landed at HBO for an Emmys push this MONTH. I hope the TV movie of it all means it's no big creative loss for us Streepers (even though Lange is my #2)!

    1. Interesting move (and official name change) for The Great Lillian Hall. I saw a little tag line that says a bit more about the character's journey...sounds like Lillian possibly showing early stages of dementia.
