Hey folks. It's been a while since I've done a poll, so off to the right you'll see the latest. I've always enjoyed when Meryl's sort of "buddy" projects with her contemporaries. Diane Keaton in Marvin's Room or Goldie Hawn in Death Becomes Her, for example. I thought I'd see what people's interests are on whom they'd most like to see Meryl star alongside as co-lead in a movie. The actresses I've chosen are mostly in her age demographic, realizing that Blanchett, Foster and Davis are a bit younger. And don't give me crap about Oprah. The world would flip if they did a big film together.
Happy voting!
Out of these I'm choosing Cate Blanchett, she haven't shared screen with Meryl yet, it'd be interesting to see. But I'd love to see Meryl alongside Helen Mirren!
ReplyDeleteOMG I'm a lunatic. How could I forget Helen Mirren?!
DeleteCate not so much but a huge YES to Helen Mirren! My wishful thinking always was Catherine Deneuve or Sophie Loren, actresses I grew up with but it's not gonna happen...
DeleteI would love to see her with Kate Winslet or Judi Dench. It would be exquisite.
ReplyDeleteI would also love to see a Call me by your name 2 with a cameo... Just wishful thinking...
Both great ideas. I think I should've made the list of options longer.
DeleteKathy Bates
ReplyDeleteGood lord I'm a disaster. How could I leave Kathy out too?! I should've just referenced my own list of buddy projects I want her to do. Still a chance for Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton pic?
DeleteThat's what made me think of her, from an old post you did! I'd love to see that happen :)
DeleteOMG I will wet my pants should Meryl and Cste act in a movie or play together! Two of the best from their respective generations. David
ReplyDeleteI voted for Jessica Lange. I am still totally bewildered as to why Nicole Kidman won so many awards for Big Little Lies. Reese Witherspoon was much better. And Laura Dern was the best of the "BLL" actresses. I'll admit, "I am not a Nicole Kidman fan. Her best work was in 'To Die For'." But... Jessica Lange in Feud outranked all the other TV actresses this past year. And think of the behind-the-scenes stories Meryl and Jessica could discuss about King Kong.

Rob, I think award recognition may not be the best indicator of how worthy a performance is...take this year's Best Actress Oscar nominations for example. Where is Cynthia Nixon in A Quite Passion? To me, she gave an AMAZING performance, and I dare say better than that of any of the nominees including Meryl whom I adore for The Post! Also, these things are kind of subjective like Reese> Nicole or Dern the MVP. Awards have always been more than just performances - it's the marketing, the political/social motivators, etc. In spite of all factors, I think Nicole deserves every award she has received for BLL. Her therapy session in that series, to me, is a masterclass in acting. Like Meryl said recently, sometimes momentum trumps everything and she was so gracious (and RIGHT) to mention that Cynthia should be working out of every ceremony with award in her hands. David
DeleteI'll admit, if I haven't already... I loathe Nicole Kidman. But, why I am responding is that you mention Meryl said recently, "Momentum 'trumps' everything". I can't imagine our Meryl even giving the Donald that much positive press!
DeleteAnd my favourite female performance of last year: Natalie Portman followed by Sally Field (My Name Is Doris). Would that Meryl and Sally could work together!

I would love to see her work with Judith Light in a film. After Light's performance on Assassination of Versace the other night, I looked her up and she and Streep are the same age. I would like them to play sisters in a film- Greta Gerwig, listen up!
ReplyDeleteWhat a poll, Jeff. Since a long long time ago. I always have a dream Meryl will be team up with Jessica Lange or Sigourney Weaver. Or maybe they could make some adventures genres together. Oh Hollywood please make it real
ReplyDeleteShould we try taking poll on famous roles over others years that we would have loved to see Meryl tackle, bearing in mind when the movie was made and Meryl being the right age etc. Such as "Looking For Mr Goodbar" in 1979.
ReplyDeleteI'd really love to hear Meryl discuss more in depth the roles she wished she got or the ones she regrets not getting a chance at. It won't happen as she is far too graceful for that.
Something I've been considering: "With which actress of the past do you wish Meryl had had the opportunity to co-star?" I could see Meryl playing Joanne Woodward's daughter currently, or I'd love to have seen Meryl opposite Shelley Winters. Any others? Celeste Holm? 3 suggestions. Rob in the Canadian Rockies
