Big opening weekend for "Into the Woods"

According to the Los Angeles Times, Into the Woods just outpaced Unbroken for second place at the weekend box office.  Woods took in $46.14 million since its opening Christmas day, just ahead of Unbroken at $46.05 million (despite the former showing in nearly 700 fewer theaters).  Early estimates suggested that Into the Woods would fall slightly short of Unbroken, but it obviously turned out being the other way around.  The final installment of The Hobbit led both films to bring its two week-gross to an impressive $168 million.

Keep it rollin'!

  2. Into The Woods is absolutely a phenomenal movie. So glad it is doing well at the box office so far. I have seen it 3 times since its opening Thursday and it just gets better every time. Meryl Streep was just out of this world good - she always is - but WOW - amazing voice. Last Midnight was awesome.

  4. The HR article gives us hope The Good House is going forward. I just hope
it hits post production before Meryl goes on hiatus.

    1. With the Hollywood Reported article, I just can't imagine that they won't actually do it. Maybe Meryl has decided that the Florence movie will be the last she will say "yes" to for a while. She signed on for The Good House in August 2013, and it's with her buddy Robert DeNiro. So if Florence Foster Jenkins wraps by July at the latest, Meryl would be ready for The Good House by fall. I don't imagine either being particularly grueling shoots. Now just so they move Master Class forward! If we don't hear anything by the end of January, I'll assume it's canned for now.

  5. Jeff,

Do you think Meryl reads your terrific blog? Hope so.

    1. Ha. I doubt it. It think it's possible she's heard of it. From what I can gather it's the only actual "blog" devoted specifically to her that I've found that provides regular commentary. SimplyStreep is amazing but it doesn't get too editorial, mostly a great information resource about ALL things Meryl. That's probably as close to an official site that she has.

    2. I disagree, I imagine she has seen as as we know from the awards season 2012 that she does read some stuff about herself online. Maybe one of us is her? Ha!

I am very pleased with the response to Into The Woods. I was in Canary Wharf in London today and there was a gigantic billboard with Meryl's Witch on it advertising the film. Really hope it does great business worldwide and becomes Meryl's second highest grossing film.

    4. Yes he's quite good actually. Glad she isn't going back to that cretin Jonathan Ross or This Morning. Hopefully it's already been sent out to the BAFTA voters

  6. I just noticed Ricki's release date appears to have changed to August 7th - Her slot for Julie and Julia and Hope Springs. This would give Meryl more time to comfortably finish Masterclass and Florence. Here's hoping.

    1. That's the UK release date. From I can tell it's still June 26 in the States. Where did you see this change?

Looking forward to her future movies and am sure hoping she was joking when she mentioned taking a long break - she is too dang good and so loved by so many. She is certainly a treasure.
