I've been open about my ambivalence about Meryl's participation in this show at this point. It's felt rather dull for me the last two seasons. But I'm actually kind of interested to see how it looks and plays out in the new U.K. environment, picturing more of a cozy murder mystery, Agatha Christie-style.

She is one of the rare greats who has handled her entire career with such consistency contrary to French actress Isabelle Adjani, for instance, whose end of career is a disaster.

I wish her to be happy with Martin but , just remembering some fan account on X saying Martin gave her the confidence to do SNL seems to me so ridiculous that a blog such as yours can be considered as a blessing.

I doubt Corrections is starting production this year or we would have gotten the casting news by now. Also, Meryl will be in the Women's gala in Nov and my suspicion is that Only Murders will wrap in Sep/Oct for a Dec release. I don't know about you but I have this feeling that Meryl has stopped taking risks since Martin's romance. Prada? She can do it with here eyes closed. Only Murders? Same. SNL? Please, don't get me started on that. Ten years ago, I would have never imagined Meryl's career to head in this direction, not that it's bad but for someone like her, it's a pity. Let's hope I'm proven wrong pretty soon.
ReplyDeleteOnly Murders has wrapped, they made posts about it, and the National Women's History Museum gala is irrelevant to anything and has no bearing on anything and she isn't stated to actually be attending it so there is no reason to bring that up. They have hired a casting director for Corrections so it is moving along. And I know you have your mind set on this and nothing will change it, but Martin is not keeping her from anything, in fact he has likely given her the confidence to even return to a role like Miranda Priestly, and that's a good thing. You suggest he's robbing her of her independence but I believe it is actually you doing that by acting like having a supportive man in her life is the reason she isn't doing the roles you want her to do, as if she isn't her own person who makes her own decisions, and she's allowed to just have fun. You don't get to sit behind a computer screen and act like you alone knows what's best for her.

He won a Tony Award for a Broadway show, not Cabaret or Variety show, a musical theatre production with a story, which you would know if you actually looked into it. But they would be more likely to do a play that has a few songs rather than a full musical anyway, so again, you have nothing to worry about.

EVERYBODY THINKS MERYL SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO WHAT SHE WANTS. No on is disputing that or coming close to it. Maybe she's doing that right now. But it's boring. And it's not anything close to likely what made most of us fans.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't know what you like about Meryl, Eva. If it's her acting, then it surprises me that you are satisfied with her last 5-6 years. I like things about her beyond her acting, but I came to her because of her acting. I just wish we got to see her more in things that got me (and likely most other die-hard fans) into her in the first place. Like I said, it's boring and uninteresting now. Murders is boring and uninteresting now. And I think this wish to see her more in more challenging things is inflated by the fact that she's not exactly in the early stages of her career. That have been opportunities, and for any number of reasons, they haven't come to fruition. Yes, she can do what she wants. And WE can say we may not approve of the quality of the material she's choosing, and that has to be okay with you.
You can hope she will do more films without dissing TV and Broadway, and claiming someone that obviously means a lot to her is dragging her down, you don't think that's weird?

DeleteI'm not suggesting misogyny is good. I've questioned myself whether Meryl is choosing to do less because of her relationship with Martin. It's a natural thought, the slowness and dropped projects has happened during that time frame. And even if she did, THAT'S OK TO CHOOSE THAT. Some fans are just disappointed she's doing less. I'm one of them. Tell me this, are you satisfied with her projects over the past 3-4 years? A simple yes or no will suffice.
DeleteI love OMITB so I'm happy with it- but here's the timeline: Let Them All Talk was her last serious leading film role, came out in 2020, filmed in 2019, so then the pandemic happened, and her projects slowed down, which is obviously well before she joined OMITB, and per her own words that she wanted joy, she perhaps wasn't in a good headspace for anything serious or just to lead something- Useful Idiots not panning out is more likely scheduling issues, but the fact she was interested in that plus Joni and Corrections, indicates something positive changed for her, not negative.
DeleteI'm not arguing her motivations or uncontrollable reasons for things not coming together. I'm simply bemoaning the fact that they didn't happen and aren't happening. She signed up for Places Please (later renamed The Great Lillian Hall) in early 2021, but then for whatever reason that didn't happen. I agree that there are glimmers of hope in the fact that projects she signs up for do seem more Meryl-y (the aforementioned Places Please, Useful Idiots, Joni Mitchell, Corrections), but where are they? Frustrated fans have no other avenue but to speculate, and some do so in not the most gracious of ways. But some of us don't put blinders on to what the reality is like you seem to, nor are they satisfied with drivel like OMITB like you say you are.

Let's agree to disagree - I think Only Murder is a whopping bore (especially the last two seasons). It's good that you like it but please do not go about imposing that view on others just as I won't do that to you or others. Like what someone here has said, it's hard to believe Meryl's career in the past 5 years has degenerated to this level - again not that TV is second-class, just Only Murder in particular. Look at the recent TV stuff done by other brilliant actresses like Cate Blanchett and Michelle Pfeifer. They're fantastic. Or even theatre work like that with Lauren Metcalfe and again Blanchett/Nina Hoss with all that role-swapping! Meryl is arguably the most important actress of her generation so we Meryl fans feel such a pity that her projects of late have not been up to par, to say nothing of the fact that she's nearing 80 in a few years' time where roles may be extremely limited.

DeleteGood morning, I didn’t mean to sound rude or arrogant when I talked about my colleagues in college. The thing is, last week, I had the opportunity to discuss Meryl’s case with my colleague who teaches cinema and there is a consensus in the academic world that she does not shine as bright as she should. OF COURSE it does not take a university teacher to admit that but when you get blamed for not knowing what you are talking about, you tend to react perhaps more than you should and explain that you are not ignorant. Indifference would be best, I suppose, but it is hard to accept someone's repeated attempts to force you to admit that Martin Short is a major artist, which has nothing to do with him being a good person I guess.

This could’ve ended a long time ago if someone just clearly said that one person is taking it too far.

Meryl Streep is one the greatest actresses of the late 20th and early 21st centuries and many of her fans, who know her films from A to Z, who listen to her interviews, who would like to get a chance to meet her beyond the mere crowds of teenagers/young adults of the Prada 2 press tour and get a chance to interact with her at events such as film festivals, or even at lectures actors sometimes do, who are interested in her beeing awarded all the prizes she deserves while she is still with us, in her having the most glorious career end they would dream of, will continue to consider that Murders will not be remembered as her best work. They will continue to believe she was made for greater things, as her entire career proves it, and you will NEVER be able to silence them.

To everyone above - the ones that think Only Murders is below her and she needs to do something worthy of her level and the ones that think Marty gave her the "confidence" back to do Prada etc. have you ever considered that she is not doing anything else not by choice but just because... there is nothing else out there for her to do??? We hear news about her being attached to various amazing projects over and over again and then they don't happen. We should compare her to other actresses in their late 70s not to people from another generation. Yes, we all want her to do movies, we all want to see her brilliance again, we all want to see her back at the Oscars, winning if possible, but let's be serious Only Murders or Martin Short are not keeping her away from that. Just as I think it's ridiculous to say that she stopped acting in "serious projects" because of him).
