First full trailer released for "The Devil Wears Prada 2"

The first full trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2 was just released:

There's not a lot we can glean from this in regard to the story. If you weren't already familiar with the original I feel like someone would have absolutely no idea what this movie is about. But I imagine that's sort of what they're banking on, knowing that people appetites for this film are strong and all they/we really want is to them all together.

All the actors look great, their clothes of course, particularly Miranda's, look stunning. Meryl looks great, if really thin. Of course it was sort of the character, but in your 70s, it can look a little harsh. It was also a little weird how Miranda apparently didn't remember Andrea. I guess it's supposed to read as she never thought about Andrea after she left twenty years ago, but it comes across almost like she's a bit ditzy. I know it's just a trailer, and they'll probably release a second one that might be a bit more serious or give us a sense of the plot. Miranda just seems far less imposing than in the first. And maybe the character is! Maybe she's on the defensive or feels her position is not as it used to be and her confidence and presence are dimmed.

I'll have to let this percolate for a while and give it a few more watches. Regardless, I can't imagine this film isn't going to do huge numbers at the box office, and it's just great to see Meryl in something big again!

  1. I think the not remembering is a bit of a power play from ol’ Priestly. She has a thing for those and it’ll make their inevitable emotional scene where she confesses all that more effective. That said, I’m very nervous about a Miranda type character in a culture that has rightfully challenged toxicity in the workplace!

    1. Yeah, like maybe Miranda knows or feels that and she's doing her damnedest to play nice. But it's a put on, and it's not her. Would be a great scene if we then see the mask fall.

    2. I like this take. Miranda seems too…mellow in the trailer. But the look Nigel gives to her “We’re all so thrilled “ suggests she’s reining it in for a reason.

    3. Agreed in regard to the Nigel look. Miranda is faking it.

  3. Having already processed the initial shock - I think this doesn't look great, tbh. Meryl's take on Miranda seems weirdly off (her delivery of the lines makes me think she should have probably opted for staying method?). Not to talk about the lighting. Where is the color?! I really want to like this but I have to be honest here.

    1. She didn't enjoy going full method she wasn't going to do it again. Also this was never going to be a carbon copy, Meryl would only do it if it were going to explore Miranda more. And we're only seeing her around the few people who know her better than most, she would let her guard down a bit with them

  4. Yeah I don't like Miranda's behavior from this trailer. But we all know Meryl, and there's no way she's not being super deliberate about her choices for her 20 years after the original. The more I watch it and think about it and read others' comments online, I'm thinking more and more that we're seeing Miranda acting. And she's not great at it when it has to be warm and welcoming or not purely dismissive.

    1. I was concerned after last year's teaser that Meryl's acting will be off in this movie. But this trailer has reasured me to a degree. In my opinion her delivery during the initial encounter with Andy was good and the rest of the scenes look solid. I am convinced Miranda is acting during the encounter with Emily. That's why it feels "off" (but funny, nevertheless - it is a comedy afterall). Nigel would have told her to "be nice" as they need Emily's money. But Miranda can't act or be nice. In the rest of the scenes Miranda is Miranda - icy stares and all. Oh well, I guess we will have to see it. This movie will do good at box office regardless but we all want a strong performance. And the Miranda's shoes are big shoes to fill.

  5. I like it - Miranda definitely had to change her game to stay in power over the last 20 years. Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen!
