While I wasn't expecting that Meryl would not be part of the upcoming fifth season of Only Murders in the Building, we hadn't really had any confirmation of her participation until today. She was spotted with her on-screen husband/real-life boyfriend Martin Short on the sidewalk while filming a scene for the show.

Jeff, I feel the same way as you. Not excited at all but good that she's happy and working and cozying up to Martin Short. Looks like there's no movie in the pipeline. Sigh!
ReplyDeleteI love when Meryl works but honestly I prefer leading roles. Having an actress of Meryl's caliber and not using her is truly a waste. If instead it is her choice I hope the desire to act returns soon

ReplyDeleteSomeone brought up an interesting point about mixing love life with work. I wouldn't go so far to say that Meryl has abandoned her interest in good movie roles but to a certain extent, I agree that she's doing S5 merely due to Martin because her Loretta character has already hit the dead end as far as engaging development is concerned - well, that's just my opinion anyway. This reminds me of Barbra Streisand when she hooked up with Jon Peters in the 70s and allowed him to produce some of her worst albums ever (Butterfly, anyone?) and traded her prestige movie roles (Way we were, what's up doc?) for horrid ones (main event). Anyway, to the person who has expressed disappointment in Meryl, please hang in there. I hope she surprises us.

ReplyDeleteOf course I want to see Meryl on other projects (as lead), but I’m delighted at these behind the scenes photos. I’m sure it takes a few weeks of her time in the year, at the most. And it looks like she’ll have a scene with Dianne Wiest which is always great.

DeleteAn actress like Meryl is difficult to find, I live in Italy and perhaps Anna Magnani had her talents. By that I mean she should have a pipeline of directors who want to work with her!
ReplyDeleteAs a longtime fan, I can't help but be disappointed with this latest news. We're talking about Meryl here, one of the greatest actresses ever. Yet she prefers to inhabit this character to death in a so-so TV show, a character that has grown thin and weary in S4. Why? Martin? Maybe. Lack of juicy roles for women over 70s? I doubt so. Like I said, if she's not Meryl, yeah maybe. While I respect her choices, I am rather crushed. If she were the lead in some Broadway show, I would be over the moon even though I'm not from America and won't probably have a chance to see her. But at least she's playing the lead in a play, not some flimsy overstayed character in a TV series that's hardly exciting anymore despite the roster of special guest stars. I love S1 & 2 and 3 just because of Meryl if nothing else but S4 was a huge yawn. When was the last time she was in a movie? Don't Look up in 2021. Five f**ing years ago! Like I said, for other actresses, okay I understand. But one of our greatest actresses? I don't get it. Sorry for my ranting.

DeleteTo the person who has desperately posted twice (wanted joy/Loretta into investigation), allow me to be clear. I'm talking about the possible reasons for Meryl joining S5 NOT S3 so my guess is that maybe Martin has something to do with it. And my opinion is that her character has not been going anywhere interesting in S4 and that's why I'm not excited about her involvement in S5, whether she's involved with investigation or not. Please kindly allow Meryl fans to express their thoughts without trying to shove defense after defense down our throat. We all love Meryl and we appreciate Jeff putting effort and passion in keeping this blog going. There's really no need to 'correct' us. Thank you for your cooperation.
DeleteI understand that we all think the same way, that is, we would like Meryl involved in films or series with leading roles. If we look around there are very few films with strong female characters, then Meryl is an actress who is known and loved all over the world so her films can be distributed in many countries but not even female directors tell stories suitable for Meryl.

DeleteLet's all just take a breath and keep things polite. I suspect that Meryl's continued involvement in OMITB is because it's sort of like "why not? What else am I doing?" It probably takes very little out of her day and I'm guessing she has a wonderful time on set with all those folks.
ReplyDeleteMeryl continues to participate in the filming of OMITB. Only the crew and Martin's fans are happy. The production team can hype up the Gossip again. Meryl is now like Martin's pendant and accessory, both in work and private life. It is hard to imagine a great actress making such a choice. The influence of a partner on a person is really great. The role of Loretta has no meaning in the S4, It is just a love supplement for Martin's character. Meryl actually wants to participate in the S5. It's terrible. This crew and Martin himself are consuming Meryl.

DeleteMeryl is by no means Martin's accessory. She's doing what she wants. It's not like she's cast aside any interest in doing other projects. Not that they'll all come to fruition, but there's possibilities of Narnia (I know it's voice so who cares but still), DWP2 and The Corrections all within the next year.
DeleteBy the way, did anyone happen to see Oprah's latest book club selection from yesterday? It was Ocean Vuong's "The Emperor of Gladness." One of the two main characters is an 82 year-old Lithuanian refugee living with dementia in Connecticut. Could be quite the role if turned into a film. And Meryl would be age-appropriate within a few years. By chance had she caught wind of the publishing of this novel ahead of time and purchase the rights to it (she mentioned having done so with some book last year at Cannes)? It's a stretch but I couldn't help but perk up at the character description. I'm going to read it and report back.
