It's all for fun. And you're right about different directors/screenwriters. I'm sure with several of her films that could've made a major difference. The difference between The Iron Lady and All the King's Men though, for example, is that despite not being a "great film," Iron Lady earned Meryl tons of recognition. I care more about her performance than the overall quality of the film. In my head I replaced Evenng and Dark Matter with the TV film "Prayers for Bobby" which starred Sigorney Weaver. I realise Meryl was never likely a contender for this but I love the message and the movie and wanted another piece of television for Meryl! Unrealistic as I told you!

With regards to what you suggested about "All the King's Men" I wonder about how richly some of Meryl's other films would have improved by changing Director or Screenwriter. I am thinking in particular about The Iron Lady here although I realise it was Lloyd's pet project. I do hope for another Mike Nichols project before his end though, I think he and Meryl make magic when they collaborate.

It's been really fun to speculate on what might have been but as you said, with most of her contemporaries being relegated to not-seen films or supporting parts Meryl is blazing a trail which is awesome to behold.CJameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12937312863597687063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3751049975001656578.post-81217659294770131482014-04-06T03:06:03.389-05:002014-04-06T03:06:03.389-05:00Thanks for sharing...I guess I'll be more guar...Thanks for sharing...I guess I'll be more guarded the next time I pinch information from IMDB.Jansen Limhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13924932930221980927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3751049975001656578.post-33840255484598349802014-04-05T23:00:27.292-05:002014-04-05T23:00:27.292-05:00I don't buy it. IMDb also has a quote regarding American Gigolo: "According to the book "The Meryl Streep Story" (1984), Meryl Streep was offered and turned down the role of Michelle because she didn't like the tone of the film." So they've already contradicted themselves.

She was not turned down for American Gigolo. I can find no article that discusses Streep's interest or consideration for Elizabeth aside from calling it a role she was turned down for. And again, as she was close to 50 and would've been playing someone 25, it just doesn't seem that it was ever a consideration. I would concede if there is any evidence of the circumstances surrounding her potential involvement in Elizabeth. The greater likelihood is that it was never a thing. Again, probably confusion among fringe writers regarding the Mary Start/Elizabeth I project that fell apart around the same time.

In general, I take IMDb "trivia" with a HUGE grain of salt. At least need a link with specifics before I'm on board with the idea that she was actually interested in the role of Elizabeth and rejected. From what I've researched, roles she didn't get:

King Kong
Sweet Dreams
Remains of the DayJeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13115351346180340694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3751049975001656578.post-27636113927204561982014-04-05T22:27:56.509-05:002014-04-05T22:27:56.509-05:00No it's true based on IMDB page and a few othe...No it's true based on IMDB page and a few others.

Has only been turned down for four roles: Michelle Straton in American Gigolo (1980), Patsy Cline in Sweet Dreams (1985), Miss Kenton in The Remains of the Day (1993), and Elizabeth I in Elizabeth (1998).

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000658/bio

Hope you find this useful.Jansen Limhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13924932930221980927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3751049975001656578.post-72955875985528636812014-04-04T23:14:39.756-05:002014-04-04T23:14:39.756-05:00I actually don't think that's true. I'...I actually don't think that's true. I've never seen any evidence that streep was interested in that role. Elisabeth I was around 25 when she took the throne. Meryl would've been 48 during filing. Are you maybe thinking of her plan to team with Glenn Close in a film adaptation of the play. I didn't know about this until years later although when I first watched Elizabeth, I thought the role would have been perfect for Meryl. Blanchett was fantastic as well.Jansen Limhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13924932930221980927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3751049975001656578.post-13417956762838954292014-04-04T15:53:01.858-05:002014-04-04T15:53:01.858-05:00It's being released in the U.K. in January, wh...It's being released in the U.K. in January, which suggests to me that it'll have a release in the U.S. before year end to qualify it for Academy Award recognition.
