Our girl turns 76 today. I feel more optimistic about how much we're going to see her on screen in the near future than I was last year at this time. I don't think anyone would fault her (or anyone) for deciding to hang things up. But I think acting is different than digging ditches or treating patients in a clinic. It's a different kind of work that, particularly for Meryl, is perhaps more necessary for personal wellness and gratification than it is for some sense of being useful. And we all benefit from it.
The Devil Wears Prada sequel is set to start filming next month, the fifth season of Only Murders in the Building is likely going to be released at the end of the summer, she's voicing Narnia soon, and there's still the possibility that the limited series version of The Corrections will get underway later this year. This last one is the project I'd most want her to complete. The point is that she's still kickin' when it comes to acting on screen, and that's all I care about.
Not that I wouldn't mind having another new and exciting project announced in the next few months. As long as the get made! Positive reception and/or solid box office for her upcoming projects can only help in making things actually happen. I'm looking forward to the next year.
Feels completely unreal that I've been a fan since her age had a 5 in front of it! Also, fyi, though I doubt its likelihood of fruition a Deadline reporter and Amanda Seyfried got a little gossipy about that rumoured Crowe project in this interview: https://deadline.com/2025/06/long-bright-river-amanda-seyfried-interview-1236430498/.
ReplyDeleteThe reporter affirms "Cameron Crowe is making the biopic of her starring Meryl Streep" and Amanda elaborates that "Cameron’s [Mitchell's] close friend, so he’s been working on a separate project for someone of Meryl’s age" and that "there’s no room for me in that movie"
So clearly it's at least a pitch (possibly a lead one - gasp!) that's being going around the "town" but I find it strange that Deadline or the like wouldn't have run a confirmation of the project by now if it had made any progress in terms of funding or distribution.
All that said, you're right to see brighter skies ahead for us fans!
Oh wow. That actually seems like it could be a real thing if Seyfried knows about it (and I guess the reporter asking about it as if it's a known thing). What I like is that it sounds like Crowe's movie is so specific to someone of Meryl's age, so maybe it would be lead. Not against it.
DeleteWell what she says is the Joni biopic is no longer happening but that Cameron has another project in the works for an older female lead
DeleteDid you get the impression that the Crowe project with a lead for someone Meryl's age is NOT a Mitchell biopic?? When I read the language in the interview, my takeaway was that Seyfried was going to potentially be in a Mitchell biopic that was "put to bed" after her manager passed. And that Crowe (being Mitchell's close friend), is working on a separate project (of Mitchell's life) for "someone Meryl's age." Then she said she didn't know about Meryl until the dulcimer thing. That makes it seem pretty clear to me that the Crowe project for someone of Meryl's age is a Michtell project.
DeleteD’arcy you got me thinking!
ReplyDeleteI saw the trailer for Kramer vs Kramer in a suburban Sydney cinema sometime in early 1980. My parents were in the process of getting divorced, so I was absolutely gripped by that short stretch of screen time. My grandmother, a few seats along, muttered, “Well we won’t be seeing that one,” which of course made me more intrigued.
All of the actors compelled me, so that by the time the home video revolution came along, I had a stack of catching up to do and saw The Deer Hunter, Kramer vs Kramer, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Sophie’s Choice and Silkwood, all from my brown velvet bean bag.
The first time I saw a whole Streep movie on the big screen was Out of Africa, as the crowds flocked to catch it in early 1986.
That was it for me. I was an absolutely besotted and quiet Streep fan. I had to glean all the news as best I could from the media and books.
Imagine my delight when Jeff’s blog came along!!!
Happy Birthday Meryl. No matter what happens from here, we’ll always have the movies!!!
Giving it some thought, I may have first seen Meryl on the big screen when Silkwood was in local cinemas. I have a garbled, early-teen memory of the shame I felt hearing boys in my class deriding the film because of Cher’s character. At that age I had no ability to counter such nonsense and I think I buried the whole experience in order to feel safe.
ReplyDeleteI first saw Streep on the big screen in Julia, but I was late and missed her scenes, lol. Then came The Deer Hunter, I didn't think much of her role; not till Manhattan - she became a star before my eyes, and I followed her since..
ReplyDeleteFor me it was “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”. I was underage (it was an R rated film), but I was with an older family member. I’m a bit embarrassed to admit this now, but it took me a while to register that the very British Sarah and the very American Anna were played by the same actress!
